I don't think tentacle demons exude hydraulic fluid.

Of course not, they exude unknown substances.

Incidentally, how is enough oxygen to support 33 men and whatever engines they're using for power diffusing down through a hole that small/long?

Trough an 8 cm hole with a length of 670 meters you're not getting much in the way of diffusion. Now there may just be a large amount available in the mine already (they have at least 2 km of tunnel system at their disposal), the bedrock is porous enough to support sufficient diffusion or there are other holes trough which oxygen can come. Probably a combination of those things. Luckily, if air gets stale, it's quite easy to pump down air, though they'll need a strong set of pumps on the surface for that.

I think the substances they exude are pretty well known.

Well, to any teenage boy anyway.

Chile's answer to improve the miners' morale? Let them watch soccer.

Luckily, since the miners are Chilean, that actually worked pretty well.

Hey, that's nice. I hope they're holding up down there. If they haven't gone insane yet, they are hardy as hell.

Or maybe I'm just a pussy. Either way.

Was I the only one who thought 'Why don't they just pass down a few tons of girders, and then attempt to dig them out?'

It's eight centimeters, they could pass down a blowtorch, a rivet gun. Hell, you could feed a power cord through that space. You could even fit pony bottles in that.

Why you could even fit a ten centimeter rock auger down. Then a twelve centimeter rock auger. Then a fourteen...

Nikov knows where it's at.

Until it's big enough to fit a slightly emaciated hooker.
Amirite?
