RL Dwarf Fortress - Chile Edition
« on: August 22, 2010, 07:21:56 pm »

In Chile, 33 miners are trapped by a massive cave in. It's going to take four months to dig them out.

A second note from the miners indicated they were living in a makeshift refuge. Using a bulldozer, they have created a canal of fresh water and have used electricity from a truck engine to rig up lighting deep inside the notoriously dangerous copper mine.

Uh, wow. These guys are either really lucky or really unlucky, depending on how this goes.

Using the hole created by the probes, rescue workers now plan to send down food, medicine and water as doctors struggle to keep the men alive and healthy while mining experts debate the options for building an escape route.
That's pretty cool. Hopefully they're successful.

Wow, almost an IRL Case of the Speluncean Explorers.

Wow, I now realize I should try to reenact that book in DF.

You know, even though it's a 2,200 foot deep hole, I'd think they would at least try to lower a harness down or somthing.

I'm very glad to hear they're okay and will be (eventually) getting out all right. I remember reading about the original collapse and didn't really feel so optimistic about it. What a bunch of champs.

Plump helmets. Cave wheat. Each other.

You know, even though it's a 2,200 foot deep hole, I'd think they would at least try to lower a harness down or somthing.

This. With steel cable, a professional-grade climbing harness, and a slow pull upwards.

My only guess as to why they don't is that the hole is really tiny in spots and widening it is what will take the four months.
