It's part of the LoR patch. The "learning" ambitions add little pop-culture reference events. I don't mind them, some are pretty damn funny. I suppose if they really bother you could delete the events or try and find a mod that improves them.

Doesn't really bother me. It's just interesting to see and funny but I rarely have bad rulers because I have an elective monarchy most of the time.

My current ruler is crap at everything but stewardship.

Yup. Elective is by far the best choice. Just marry a courtier that's a genius and have a whole bunch of children until you get one with the trait, groom the heir personally and you should have a perfect ruler. You can also do all kinds of fun things like marrying into the Byzantines, pushing that person's claim and finally making them your heir.

I'm trying to figure out if I prefer agnatic or agnatic-cognatic.
Agnatic allows you to control your vassals better and to be able to disband mega-dukes a lot easier, I rarely have a problem with heirs/isn't a problem in elective.
Agnatic-cognatic allows you (particularly in elective) to do all kinds of fun things with claims, gets you a ton of heirs if you need them. Since I rarely play the marriage game I think agnatic might be the better choice for a stable realm.
Absolute cognatic is useless and the Basque can keep it.

What does buying the dlc actually do?

Sword of Islam lets you play Muslims + new muslim UI and graphics. Legacy of Rome gives you retinues (standing armies like EU3), it gives you a whole range of Byzantine flavour events, the ability to reform the Roman empire.

Isn't it possible to just mod the events to be available without the dlc?

Somewhat. it depends on the events. Things like blinding and castration are hard-coded.

I don't know, you can give land to women in it. That can useful in the matters of Lovers :P

Actually the Legacy of Rome DLC just allows you to play Orthodox counties, all the events and such were released in a patch alongside it, like what happened with Sword of Islam.

That's not true at all. You were always able to play Orthodox countries and Paradox wasn't going to suddenly make it so you couldn't play them without the DLC. Legacy of Rome just added some flavour events.

Not to mention Absolute is the only feasible way to try and play an all-female game. Which is not nearly as easy as it sounds. Especially the Basque thing. That part REALLY bites.

Playing a female is extremely easy if you've groomed them to have the Attractive trait. Gives a massive bonus to male vassals.

I think it's to most anyone. But that's not exactly easy unless you know how to play the gene game... and have lots, and lots of kids. Then can find a way to off all the males (unless you go Absolute). Then of course, keep an eye on all the ones you marry off.

This game really needs a way to revoke multiple people's titles at once.

You really should be able to revoke all titles under a duke title in addition to the duke title when dealing with traitors. Revoking just a duke title and leaving the guy as a count is pretty silly. I wouldn't even say it's overpowered, it just necessitates dukes to acquire land outside of their main duchy or multiple duke titles, like Henry the Lion and Frederick Barbarossa, where Bavaria was revoked after a failed rebellion but the Welfs maintained control of Brunswick. Not to mention the issue of being unable to revoke land from dukes who own more than 50% the counties in a duchy because they'll just usurp the duchy title before you have a chance to revoke their counties.
