Just chiming in to say my appreciation of summon butterflies has like tripled. It + sticky flames is basically a sure-fire way to kill stone giants without being hit... or anything else that doesn't resist fire, really. Let the critter expend its ranged options on butterflies, then kite away. It's surprisingly effective to use the poor little flying buggers as arrow catchers for the footaurs and such, too. They even tie up fireballs and junk while bigger summons deal with whatever the problem is.

A+ spell, worth it at probably five times the cost. Just use it fairly liberally, heh. When half the screen's covered in multicolored 'b's, most things are going to have a hard time getting at you!

EDIT: Just used stack five on a deck of wonders: Its only five cards were Wild Magic... and Experience x4. I... what do I do with this bounty? I just got like 70k XP for free.

If you can consistently get power lvl 2 draws, that's 4 free lvls too. However, that Wild Magic card can be HIGHLY dangerous, especially if you can always get lvl 2 draws. I'd recommend heading back to the temple to do it, and be ready to get out of the abyss.

As for the free skill xp, Fire magic and conjurations are always good. Get em up high, start flame storming. Its not quite an I Win button, but its pretty close.

Stack five, my friend. Wild Magic's the last card in the deck now :P

Don't have access to a flame storm book, though. And the char's a SpEn, heh. Conj is at six or so now, but I only just got fire magic up to level 1. EDIT: And this happened on vault six or so, so... yeah.

Well, if your worshiping Nemelex, you could probably get yourself some Trowel cards and hit up Bazaar's, but short of that, yeah, your not getting Fire Storm. Fighting maybe, though that is a PAIN to raise. Heck, Evocation's is always a good bet when worshiping Nemmy.

Four experience cards, eh? I'd probably use at least one on sitting next to an orc for five hundred turns, training shields and dodging. You can never have too much of those. Or spellcasting. Yeah, generally, just train whatever skill you think you might need.

Alright, I just ran into a spriggan enchanter ghost, and turns out it's the second best player in the tourney:
http://crawl.akrasiac.org/rawdata/78291/morgue-78291-20100821-230714.txt

Now my question is, can ghosts cast hibernation? Should I be absolutely terrified of being stabbed?

Dey can cast somethin' like four or five of th'spells the player had when they died, determined through means I don't remember. I'd probably be more worried about it hasting up, going invisible, and just beating you into the dirt.

All dat bein' said, it is a fairly low level sprig ghost. You might not have much trouble if you hit hard enough.

Anywaaay: http://crawl.develz.org/info/index.php?q=ghost
http://crawl.chaosforge.org/index.php?title=Player_ghost

EDIT: Also, good point soadreqm. Fundamentals -- I'll spend two getting wailed on by something, and the other two spewing corona summon butterflies at a wall or somethin'.

I remember being repeated put to sleep and then stabbed until I died by one of my ghosts so yes you should be worried.

Woohoo! My second online victory!

1230208 FreeHugs the Axe Maniac (level 27, 275/275 HPs)
Began as a Mountain Dwarf Fighter on Aug 20, 2010.
Was a High Priest of The Shining One.
             Escaped with the Orb
             ... and 3 runes (of 3 types) on Aug 22, 2010!

This time around, I cleaned out Zot:5 the hard way, bit by bit. Let me tell you, that is harrowing.

Edit:
I want to try for my first streak. Suggestions on best class option, other than SpEn? I'm considering Merfolk Crusader based on Demos's guide.

Edit: Not Demos's guide.

Congrats on your 2nd win!  :D I didn't write that guide. My guides can be found here. MfCr was my 2nd win and it has gotten better over time, so it's a good choice. Deep dwarf necromancer and high elf/demonspawn wizard are also good.

Impressive a win with a pure fighter without spells other than the god given abilities, i didn't thought it was possible.
Congratulations

DD Healer was my first win, and should be an easy 3 rune win

I got the swamp rune...taking the total tally of unique runes this tournament to 5 for me :D
That's also 50 points for the Blacksmiths, eventhough we need to overtake Eli in the combo highscores to regain first place

 I have an interesting D:18..

126030 | D:18    | Noticed Nikola
126064 | D:18    | Defeated Nikola
126067 | D:18    | Noticed Azrael
126075 | D:18    | Noticed Mara

What would you guys do, try to kill them, or go back and explore the Vault (I did everything else except Slime and Elf:7)? I have full fire resist, but perhaps I'm not yet tough enough to face Mara. Here is a current character dump: http://crawl.akrasiac.org/rawdata/frankhovis/frankhovis.txt
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
edit: also an ancient champion vault on D:17, which sounds mysterious and potentially deadly..
