Maybe you can implement a battle checklist. Something simple, but useful as a reminder, like this:

1. Check weapon specs and write those down.
2. Roll for hit. 1 is... 2 is...
3. Check target specs and write those down.
4. Roll for dodge. 1 is... 2 is...
5. Roll for damage. 1 is... 2 is...

And put that in a larger checklist so you're unlikely to miss anything and turns are easier to handle.

Apparently it's quite easy to misplace a super laser. Slightly deterred, I duck behind cover and wait quietly until there is something for me to shoot.

They're only about the size of a large rocket launcher, but they have quite a lot of energy in them.
