Prison Complex of the USDK- Community Fort
« on: April 20, 2010, 08:48:05 pm »

The pieced together fragments of the saga of a Dwarven expedition, found by the famed Human archaeologist Unar Trolongotzy in his efforts to unearth the past history of
the now elusive race of Dwarves in the year 5285.

Onul Noiselessinks, Premier of the United Socialist Dwarf Kingdoms, or USDK, sat upon his simple stone throne to address the assembled council.
"Fellow dwarves" he said. "I bring you here for this secret meeting to address a shadow upon our way of life. Treason stalks our halls. Thieves.
Aristocrats. The revolution is in danger. They must be excised so that Communism can survive in The Crystalline Salves and in Osmlo Tosm as a whole!"
"But how?" asked the Diplomat Shem Flashhalls. "Killing them outright is against dwarven ethics, even if they are enemies of the state-"
"Exactly!" roared the General, Edzul Organspear (an appropriate name).
Onul slammed his fist down on the plain stone table. "Comrade Edzul! I have just the idea..."

Two weeks later...

The Premier has asked me to lead an expedition to the frozen southern wastes, apparently to found a prison. I am to take 6 other brave comrades with me to these untamed wilds, where The Watchful Winter meets The Barbs of Squeezing that surround it.

Apparently this glacier is rich in minerals to increase the strength of the USDK, and that prisoners will be sent to extract and process these raw materials, ready to be shipped off to the Mountain Homes- with some left to protect us from the horrors of the Deep and the slavering goblin hordes, of course. We will also be housing political prisoners, such as aristocrats from the old Dwarven regime, though most are already housed at a previously abandoned fort. We will have little in the way of materials and living space at first besides what we bring with us. The glacier and mountain are completely devoid of trees, and the river may block our path to soil. We have also received reports of many 'unknown creatures' attacking mountain homes of our and neighboring civilizations, one leading a group of goblins even bringing our allies The Virginal Door to it's knees.  May the strength of our armies and the prowess of our leader protect us in the harsh journey and tough living to come!

I don't want one of the founding seven but when you get the first immigrants make me the fort's arsenal dwarf yet still keep him as a prisoner.

Gender: Either one works I guess
Name: Doctor von "Boom Boom"
Skills: Any manageral skills and he/she MUST have siege craft.

Items: Since there is no paper yet, just give him/her a table and chair for an office and dispite the size, if possible give him a siege workshop assigned to him. Also if you hit any sulfur he MUST HAVE IT!!! (a stone stockpile perhaps)

Backstory: A legendary siege smith who is also measurably insane. Clearly the fault of a failed strange mood, he has a crazy idea to make something he calls thunderpowder and something called a blunderbuss. In his reckless experiments he had caused the death and maiming of several other dwarfs and in exasperation sent him to a place where he can do a minimum of harm.

Ok, I've added everybody except LordShotGun, as he wants to be a prisoner. Still need one non-prisoner dwarf! Someone with carpentry would be appreciated.

Backstory:  One of the many prisoners of the infamous USDK Prison Complex.  Andrei Nikolaevich Petrov is a former party member.  As a prominent assistant to one of Onul Noiselesssinks' rivals, Andrei was taken into custody when the great leader rose to power.  Despite his a lower position compared to the old party leads, Andrei is a charismatic character.

Andrei toils for his keepers, but is whispering ideas of rebellion into the ears of his fellow prisoners.  The Prison Complex must be transformed into a true socialist state, uncorrupted by the greed that has warped the USDK.

OK Moose, I'll put you in the first migrant wave as well (because the founders aren't prisoners).

Still need a founding dwarf.

Ok, thank you! Since we now have 7 dwarves, I made the embark and everything. I had to bend a bit, especially for the armor- even copper took up over 200 points by itself, so I cut it down some, I'll try to forge or buy the rest at some point. Also, all weapons/armor are copper, again for cost reasons. I didn't mess with the worldgen option, probably should have.
------------------------------------------------------------------
The wagon clattered and groaned as it slowly rolled over the small foothills that foreshadowed the massive mountain range ahead. Rigoth leaned back in his perch, determined to block out the sound of the other dwarves for a moment to record the day in his journal.

Day unknown (2 months from departure)

2 months ago we embarked from The Crystalline Salve, and not one of those damned days has been enjoyable. The constant heat and flies of the central desert, and the humid fog of the myriad swamps we passed through while searching for a road, has given way to the bone-chattering cold and haunting screeches of the Giant Eagles. One can only hope that they don't take interest in a wooden speck traveling along the pass below. The glacier is still quite far to the south, and we have consumed a disturbing large amount of booze and food due to delays. That dog we brought for protection may become the main course when we arrive... Why we are carrying so much junk instead of food is beyond me. Gemstones? Really? But I digress.

I recently got around to doing an inventory on our stocks, and dug up an extended copy of the Premier's orders. Apparently some of the arriving dwarves will be soldiers for our protection, or simply patriotic workers willing to help guard the filthy traitors. According to him, their identity will be 'obvious'. Whatever that means. He also attached a copy of the fort plans from the Chief Architect. He want's the dwarves living topside?! Has the fool ever heard of the word cold? But who am I to question the Premier, and he thinks that this plan is going to work out. The plans call for a 'prisoner village' surrounded by a thick wall that will house the Guards (us), and an automated dwarf processing and interrogation center, to require minimal contact between us and the prisoners. Beyond that, it's up to us, including designing the damned thing! Good thing that Dmitri fellow knows some mechanics, we'll need it soon.

Rigoth sighed, placed his journal down and picked up the stocks list he had made earlier.

Copper Picks [3]
Plump helmets [30]
Donkey Meat [5]
Dwarven Ale [20]
Dwarven Beer [25]
Plump Helmet Spawn [10]
Pig Tail Fiber Ropes [3]
Cave Spider Silk Cloth [5]
Cave Spider Silk Thread [5]
Maple Splints [5]
Birchen Crutches [5]
Copper Battle Axe [1]
Copper War Hammer [1]
Copper Mail Shirts [2]
Copper Helms [2]
Copper Shield [1]
Warthog Leather [5]
Pitchblende [1]
Olivine [1]
Petrified Wood [2]
Bauxite [5]

And then the individual dwarves had their things, which were a flask, a waterskin (why both?), a backpack, three gems (grumble grumble) and a lay pewter amulet that Nikitia seemed very protective of.

Roshi sighed (again) at the depressing amount of remaining food. At the rate it was being eaten there would be 20 plump helmets and 30 booze as their sole food source- besides the dog- when they arrived, until farms were set up. His last journal note before going to sleep was an oddly peaceful "This fortress is ridiculously doomed."

So whats your plan? Now that immigrants come REALLY early are you gonna focus on getting the prison up and running or do basic nessesities (food, water, farmable areas) come first?

Not bad. Can we have journals? Basically we tell the events from our dwarves POVs?

My plan is to get a basic prison camp set up, along with a guard house, farms and simple mine, then use prison labor when it arrives to expand and breach the caverns etc. Then come the wall and automated gate house (which is really to prevent guard tantrums during mass prisoner die-offs by making sure the guards have minimal contact with the prisoners, so no friends. Burrows will help, a lot).

Not bad. Can we have journals? Basically we tell the events from our dwarves POVs?
Yeah, that would be cool.
