There's an unmarked quest in New Vegas where you fix a guy's food synthesiser. I'm guessing the Vaults had food synthesisers.

that's just a food processor...it takes in existing food and cleans and prepares it...like a fully automated kitchen.
There were no Star-Trek magic food from nothing boxes, but Vault-Tec bible mentioned food "extruders" that turned a nutrient paste base into different foodstuffs.  There's never been one shown though, and it still doesn't say where the paste came from.  Vault 13 and 21 were sealed for almost 200 years, and a few others were supposed to be sealed "indefinitely", so they had to have a renewable biomass resource.  With Vault-Tek's history of cutting corners (physically, logically, and morally), making the residents the primary food supply takes up a lot less room and power than making a few floors dedicated to hydroponics. (works for DF though...because a master farmer can get 1 sq. ft. of land to produce a bajilion pounds of food a year, so we really don't need it.)

The trouble is that you can't get anywhere near as much energy out of dead people as you put into them. Cannabalism is not a viable food source.

Yeah I didn't say it because it's pretty obvious: you cannot retrieve the energy a person took to grow/live from its corpse. However a recycling tech would be nice :). I am almost out of exams so I will make a release soon.

The problem with cannibalism as a main food source is that it's not especially healthy. The long-term health problems associated with frequently eating human flesh would make it inviable as a food source. Maybe animals vere brED AND SLAUGHTERED?

Actually the technology does exist in it's infancy to artificially grow real meat in a lab.

Id hardly call that real....but I'm old fashioned I guess...not to mention artificially making something real is kind of an oxymoron

That's the first thing I did, thanks for the info :).

The main problem is that most of the weapons are different kinds of the same "type" (pistol/rifle/assault rifle) and it's impossible to modify weapon stats like rate of fire so it's hard to make... Also there's a problem with different ammo. I didn't want to be overly specific, otherwise it would be a micromanagement hell (I had different ammo for different weapons in some old version... It was basically unfun to play, you couldn't find appropriate ammo in adv. mode and you were lost in your stocks in fort mode, so I killed the idea).
