It sounds like a good idea (especially if you don't want to dig too much or you are on some location where it's hard to get stone).

Searched for this and it doesn't look like it's been suggested before. I'd do it myself if I knew how, but how about implementing concrete? If you made it difficult to make but cheap to buy, you could embark with a lot of it to build your vault but struggle to obtain more to expand it.
It sounds like a good idea (especially if you don't want to dig too much or you are on some location where it's hard to get stone).

I think...limestone or gypsum as binding agent, with stone scrap as filler is the common old mixture...
http://archserve.id.ucsb.edu/courses/arthistory/152k/concrete.html  awesome...I was right...guess I didn't sleep too heavily through architecture class.

...then there's the "special" mixes...fibrous material like hair or silk mixed in increases the tensile strength, ash makes a quick drying mix, bubbles in the mix make it water and cold-weather resistant (the romans did this by mixing blood in the slurry, blood rots away during curing, leaving tiny air pockets...or you could just slap some re-bar in the middle of it and get all three boosts.

So...gypsum powder(or limestone) + any other stone in a workshop would give us 2-4 bags of cement, then a bag of cement + (ash+hair+blood)/iron makes one of two different kinds of concrete blocks.  Ash, hair, and blood giving us "cinder-blocks" which are hollow (maybe make this reaction produce 5x the number of blocks...but make them the same structure level as wood walls) and iron gives us ferro-concrete blocks which are solid but stronger(only one block per mix, but has stone wall structure level).

Hows that sound?  I'll start on it now, any ideas I'll take as well...and then it's up to Deon whether to accept it.

Wow, very nice mod Deon. Surprised I didn't try this out before. Two nitpicks I have, though.

1. Limonite and native gold have the same color/symbol in ASCII.

2. "Quiver" doesn't really work for what its used for. I can't think of an alternate name with animal skin....perhaps make quivers made of metal(is that possible?) and call them ammo canisters?

Quivers are not moddable, otherwise I would make them into ammo belts.

@JediaKyrol
Walls can't be destroyed by any means other than deconstructing or cavein. Which means 'stronger' concrete walls would be the same as wooden walls.

As it turns out, the pen was in fact a poor choice for melee combat in comparison to the sword.
So I just started playing this game and I accidentally nuked the moon.

Yes, I was going to say this but I am a bit in a sleepy mood now, I just came home from snow-sliding (how do you call it in english?:) ) with my son and I want to lay down and do nothing now haha. Also I don't want to make the system too complex, otherwise it would be hard to use gameplay-wise.

I think I found out a method of genning a good world.

Dwarf Fortress file > Data > init > World_gen.txt > Scroll down the world gen 'Wasteland USA' and delete the huge amount of numbers below.

Yeah, you will kill the landscape this way but will get the settings.

I'm not sure if this is a bug with the current DF version, or maybe its just not possible at all....but there's no option to cut clear glass in the Jewelers workshop.

I haven't bothered with glass in a while. And since it's not moddable, I can't really help here.

Also this: http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/DF2010_Talk:Glass
Try to remove the stockpile and make a new one.

yeah, realized that after I opened my yap...meant wanted to make furniture and door constructions from the inferior concrete buildingdestroyer:1 smashable, but ferroconcrete not...but I gave up on that idea half way through.

anyway...after getting distracted by Unlosing Ranger Vs. Darkdeath Evilman...I finally made the reactions...

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

like I said...I gave up...roman concrete and ferroconcrete are just two methods to get the same concrete blocks.  could possibly add in other reactions for making concrete furniture and weapon/trap components (ex. New Vegas Nightkin Sledge is a chunck of concrete with rebar poking out)...which is why I broke it into a reaction for the cement and a reaction for the concrete...but this is good enough for now...'cause man...I gotta go to work in 5 hours...

note: deon...i set the concrete production to make 5 blocks...because you are using 1 unit of binding agent, 1 coal, 1 scrap stone, and 1 iron bar...giving you one more build material than you consumed, to make it actually worthwhile, but if you keep it, set it however you want, and keep whichever reactions you want.

double note: yes...cement is a gem...because powder_misc is broken crap and I didn't want to build walls without the filler material...so a non-naturally occurring gem was the first answer I came up with.

edit:cement mixtures now produce 3 units of "mix" per reaction, and concrete reaction now produces 10 blocks, also a reaction to make cement clubs (a piece of concrete with rebar for a handle)...one reaction lets you pump out a pile of cheap weapons for a hastily formed militia

It's not worth to make 5 blocks out of a rock, a coal, one more rock and 1 iron bar, really... I will look into it, but mostly these reactions bring nothing, why would a player want to spend their priceless man-labor to make it?

Well, Vault-Tec must have had to use a lot of concrete... Maybe we could assume they invented a new formula that allows a much lower cement mix to water ratio and have the reactions yield a lot more concrete?

yeah...prolly bump it up to 10 or 20...maybe the mix would be super-aerated (I honestly don't know the actual ratio of mix slurry to set concrete...it could be higher)...like I said...wasn't thinking clearly after infinite time (ok...3 days) without sleep...but then...I don't think too clearly anyway

production bumped up, also cement club...any ideas for furniture/weapons?  concrete fallout shelter doors/hatches maybe?
