Hey!  Remember my two vile forces of darkness?  Apparently they forgot to turn off the oven 'cause they just wandered off for no discernible reason.  Yeah, it was kind of awkward.

Does that even happen?

Question: Would a regular quality steel Axe be better than a masterful quality bronze one?

So I just spent like an hour trying to get my people to cut some wood. I learned that you need an axe equipped, so I messed around with the military equipment screen for a while and gave a guy a battle axe and made that guy's ONLY job to cut wood, and he still won't do it. When I look at his inventory normally he only has civilian clothes on, even though I set them to wearing the uniform while off-duty. The wiki told me that migrant woodcutters don't come with axes, so I figure all of my old woodcutter's must've died and left this axeless, useless guy here to do all the work...
The dwarves have gone 3 years without beds and now that I've finally made the bedrooms, there's no wood for the beds. :(
So yeah, any advice on getting this to work? My dwarves deserve a good night's rest.

Question: Would a regular quality steel Axe be better than a masterful quality bronze one?

There have been many threads investigating quality versus base material. The consensus is base material matters much more than quality so a masterwork bronze would be nearly equal to no-quality steel, perhaps a bit better.

So I just spent like an hour trying to get my people to cut some wood. I learned that you need an axe equipped, so I messed around with the military equipment screen for a while and gave a guy a battle axe and made that guy's ONLY job to cut wood, and he still won't do it. You just need to make it his job to cut wood. Woodcutters (and miners) have unseen default uniforms, drafting them into the military will always interfere with their jobs.

And whether or not migrant woodcutters come with axes...you can just check their inventory. The wiki isn't 100% accurate.

I'm pretty sure the steel is better.

First of all, de-militarize him.
The axe he uses as a weapon as a soldier is considered different from a woodcutters axe, and will not be used to cut trees as woodcutters, miners, and hunters all have an invisible "uniform" that they use to wield their tools.

And ninja'd.

So, is this guy just going to naturally pick up an axe? I de-militarized him and gave it some time, but nothing's happening. The designated tree's to be cut change color like their supposed to, but none of them are flashing like they should be.

There might still be an old bug where the axe you used for the uniform is now marked for military use, and will forever be inaccessible to civilians (deleting the military squad AND freeing the barracks might have a chance of resetting it).

To be sure, you need to get another axe - make one at a forge or buy one from a trader. I believe in a pinch wooden training axes from the craftsdwarf's workshop can also be used for chopping wood.

I typically keep several axes in reserve for woodcutting purposes, due to this.

How do I let a tamed jaguar out of its cage?
I've placed the cage as it said, but do I really have to build a lever to open the cage?

Thanks :)
also is there anyway to delete ghosts completely from the RAW's?
I'm not interested in being haunted by dwarves whose bodies were annihalated. I can't bury them so they should just go away :)
