You can wear pieces of "civilian clothing" under armor, you just can't wear things like leather armor and metal armor at the same time (I.E, you can't wear a steel breastplate and a leather armor at the same time)

Why is it worthy to make obsidian? I have more stone than I need, and obsidian swords are not that good. Why bother, other than for !SCIENCE! and lolz?
Obsidian swords used to be extremely powerful (on par with steel) and are still a viable weapon against light armor. Besides that, obsidian is very valuable (3x as much as most rock), and manufaturing it ensures a solid supply of valuable, uniformly coloured stone.

Plus, it can be a good way to fill in areas with engravable stone walls.

If you cast the obsidian in the place you want the walls to be (as opposed to mining the stone and building with it, the walls are considered Natural and can be engraved.

Yes. Make a mold, fill it with magma to about 3/7 to 4/7, then pour water on it. Obsidian factory may even have multiple z-levels for more efficiency (after first layer solidifies, keep pouring water till about 3/7 to 4/7, and start pouring maga. Then repeat). Its just that it generally reqires some infrastructure, like pump stacks, aqueducts, and the like.

Ugh that sounds like a job for another day, i'm starting a new fort anyhow going for a more efficient set up and hopefully a more exciting map, I was at peace with everyone and only got like 2 thieves in 3 years gametime probably gonna look for a volcano so i can play aorund with magma instead of going 130 z levels underground, I didn't even attempt to make pump stacks to bring it up :L the cave in magma method just confuses me :S

Question again:/
Is it actually possible to get flux on a volcano zone?

IE zones usually have very long metamorphic layers a bit down, so you might get some marble layers.

Can you set dwarf military equipment so that the armor is the 'clothing' layer and then other stuff is the 'over clothing' layer?

For example, is there a way to make it so my dwarf has steel armor covered with a leather cloak and hood?

Also, if I set up a uniform and put for weapon options hammer, sword and axe will that make my dwarves choose their preferred weapon of those three or will it just cause the uniform orders to get screwed up with them constantly switching?

Thanks,

1. No. Layering is determined in the RAWs.

2. A dwarf will always try to carry any and all equipment they are assigned. Assigning multiple weapons to the same dwarf causes chaos and death (not the good kind).

With that in mind, how do I force my dwarves to drop excess weapons?

Also, is it possible to use both a crossbow/shield at the same time?

Provided they haven't grown attached, set it to be dumped and a civilian will come along and steal it from the soldier.

You can use a crossbow and a shield at the same time.
