just got a sieg consisting of gobin archers...my farms are outside but their walled off...i have a drawbridge so theres no way of them getting inside but can the archers pick off my guys from the ledge above while their farming?
Yup.

You have two choices. The first (and easiest) is to wait them out. Lock everyone inside. The goblins'll go away in a few years.

The second (more fun) is to attempt to create an anti-archer military while being besieged. Crossbows, good armor, and siege weapons will be useful. Hand-to-hand weapons less so, and traps least (gobbo archers don't walk into them all orderly like the spear-gobboes do).

Hello again. To my displeasure, recently when I play in Fortress Mode I have found that when I go to save and quit or abandon a fortress the game crashes to desktop, and Windows (XP) asks to submit an error report. I found that this is especially common after I have been playing for a long period of time at once (well, if you think 18 hours is a long time). What I have also noticed is that although it does crash when I go to save as mentioned, my progress still appears to have been recorded. When I attempt to abandon the fortress and reload after the crash, however, I find myself back where I was before all the Fun began. It's bittersweet, a bit of a let-down.

Is anyone familiar with this problem?

Is there a way to save DF mid-game without quitting? Would copying the save folder in the midst of gameplay cause any problems?

Thanks,

Ibid.

Don't abandon a fortress unless you want to abandon it permanently. To save during gameplay I do a full save/reload. It's a pain, but it works.

Okay simpler question here :)
My farmers have to treck quite a bit to get seeds, well not that far, but I want to improve efficiency.
If I put a custom pile next to my farms,(and near to the outside farms) will this decrease the efficiency of my brewers? My stills are close to the food pile which includes the seeds, does this mean that they will have to go all the way to my farm to drop seeds?
That wouldn't really achieve much since it would make them work slower :S
Hope this makes sense :D

I tried to move some animals between cages, and now i get TONS of "cancels Release Small Creature: Need empty trap." messages.

What might be the cause?

How to stop it?

Please note, disselecting the original assignments that caused the trouble does not seem to work.

At some point I managed to actually have a bar of soap made. Yeeehaw, go go me. But, still, the bar is there in the soapmakers shop, and i am getting spammed by "cancels Clean Self: Area inaccessible." that can be zoomed on the very bar that sits there in the workshop.

Any idea what's the cause?
Also - what to do to disallow the dwarf from using it to clean himself, and instead have the bar transported to the hospital, where 10 dirty dorfs await?

How can i remove floor that has been accidentally placed atop a wall?

Dwarves aren't smart enough to take a creature out of a cage and carry it to another cage.  They have to break the job up into two tasks:  remove the creature from cage A, place creature in cage B.  Removing a small creature from a cage requires an empty animal trap, since they won't just let it go free.  Without animal traps, the job can't proceed.

Build some animal traps.  This is done at the carpentry workshop and requires the Trapping skill, not Carpentry.

Dwarves are stupid, and soap is bugged.  Soap inside your hospital will be used to clean patients before surgery.  Dwarves will try to use soap in bar stockpiles outside your hospital to clean themselves, but when they pick up the soap they don't know how to use it and drop it with a job canceled message.  Store your soap in the hospital, and forbid any soap not in the hospital.

Build a lot of chests and place them in the hospital zone.  Dwarves will store hospital supplies, including soap, in the chests.  If there's any leftover soap that doesn't get stored in the hospital, forbid it to stop cleaning canceled message spam.

(d)esignate, then (n) to remove constructions.  Make sure dwarves can reach and safely stand next to the floor being removed while removing it.

A custom seed pile nearer to the farms will only be effective if you remember to disable seeds from the food piles they're in.

I would think that after 18 hours, there would be at least a couple of seasonal autosaves made...

[LAND_HOLDER_TRIGGER:2:20:20000:200000]
[LAND_HOLDER_TRIGGER:3:20:30000:300000]

..does it then mean that the fortress will only need a population of 20 for those leader types to become available? Also, are there any other penalties to a low population that I can somehow amend?
pop:export:total wealth I think. You can change the pop req to a lower number if you wish.

EDIT: oh, other penalties being titans dont attack you which can be changed in world param and in creature definition of associated megabeast. Sieges also dont come by default so you need to tweak that in associated entities also.

been there done that...but for some reason after removing and remaking it like over 9000 times he finaly decided to build it sooo i guess its all good...im so confused as to why he wouldnt make it before 'o.O
Perharp he need a little more time to figure out he need to do that job? In later version they can be sluggish to respond sometimes. Not as long as couple weeks, tho.

I'm not having any luck finding the file(s) pertaining to titans and sieges. I tried default entities, init, and default_entities and d_init in the main DF folder,  as well as a handful of the creature_ files in the region raws to no avail. Is it actually called "associated entities," or if this is something that is done in world parameters during world generation, is there any way to edit it after world creation?

Many thanks,

Ibid

For memorial stones. a mason has to carve a slab, then a stone craftsdwarf has to engrave the slab in memory of a dead dwarf, then you place the slab as a building somewhere.

yea but HOW do i build it? ive engraved tons of em but they dont show up when i try to build em as a building...what category are they? ive looked everywhere and cant find em >.<

ive gotten in the habit of replacing my chief medical dwarf as soon as he gains any notable skill in diagnosis.
It's really funny watching them do unnecessary surgery because of a wrong diagnosis.
the conditions were bad enough to turn a dwarf who didn't care about anything mad, that's pretty hardcore.

They're in the standard menu, Alt+s if I remember properly.

Also, what's the difference between the legacy and SDL version of DF?
