the conditions were bad enough to turn a dwarf who didn't care about anything mad, that's pretty hardcore.

my butcher wont butcher!! why is that?!
Are you trying to butcher an already dead creature, or slaughter a living tame creature?

If the former, is the corpse you want to butcher in a refuse pile near the butcher's shop?  If it's a wild creature lying somewhere outside, you might need to turn on gathering of refuse from outside for someone to pick it up and take it to the refuse pile.

When you butcher very small creatures like kittens or buzzards, you don't always get any usable bones.

I put a refuse stockpile set to accept only butcherable corpses next to my butcher's shop, and another one set to accept useless body parts and un-butcherable corpses outside or in a sealed-off refuse stockpile inside.

There's a thing for it, and I thiiiiink you have to hit t to get to the settings. Allow only what you want, and you have a stockpile for that item. I do it for artifacts. The second one was the worst that could happen. The wrestler will never put down his shield. No matter what, unless that arm is ripped off. And I don't know about memorial stones, good luck with that.

Hey!  New guy here.  Sort of.  I actually played a couple of the non-z-level versions, but that was a long time ago and it seems I haven't gotten any better!

I have a question.  It could be stated simply, but for full emotional impact it must be communicated in true thespian form:

SCENE THE ONLY: the well-watered slopes of a lovely volcano have recently been blessed with a colony of dorfs!  Observe as they scamper around, laughing with joy at the new-found riches.

Erush Edemsang: What ho!  Because I am the most important noble in the game, the CHIEF MEDICAL DWARF, I shall spontaneously and without cause elect to prance under the naked sun and stomp on flowers!  Because nothing could possibly go wrong!

Ten other Dorfs: We, your entire freaking medical staff and assorted minor personages, shall join you in this stupid endeavor!  Because nothing could possibly go wrong!

Fifty Goblins: lol wut up?

Erush et al: The humandwarvenity!

Narrator: No prob.  I command that all civilian dorfs remain indoors.

Dwarf Fortress:  Haha denied.

Narrator:  Huhwhat?

Hipster Goblin: It's ironic because the doctor dies first.

fin.

Why can't I command my civilians to go inside anymore?  What happened!?!

Newb giving advice: Take with salt.

Everything I've read has said commanding everyone inside is glitchy as hell. Dwarves will ignore it, run to the edge of outside/inside then come in.. all sorts of issues.

Solution seems to be to declare a burrow inside and tell everyone to go to it.

Yeah...in older versions I was able to order my civilians underground.  My current version doesn't seem to have that power.  I've read that I need to make my enter fortress a burrow and assign the civilians to it, but that is insane.  Removing the ability to order my civilians underground seems like a major step back.  Unless it got moved.

They can unequip thing they're attached to just fine. Getting attached will eventually lead to the dwarf naming the item then it becomes a semi-artifact. Your dwarf is not stuck with that item forever.

for customs stockpiles you can either define the settings for a custom stockpile in the stockpiles screens then create it. Or go to an existing stockpile, hit (q) then (s) to change it's settings.

For memorial stones. a mason has to carve a slab, then a stone craftsdwarf has to engrave the slab in memory of a dead dwarf, then you place the slab as a building somewhere.

For the trapped invaders. Build their cages somewhere, dump and reclaim all their equipment. link the cages to mechanisms, surround the cages with fortifications, station your marksdwarves nearby, open the cages and let your archers train.

Or, throw the invaders in a pit and in the pit floor surround with fortifications and shoot at them. Or Burn then, drown them, whatever.

Why can't I command my civilians to go inside anymore?  What happened!?!

The Dwarves Stay Inside order has been replaced by the more flexible Burrows and Alerts system. Basically, in ye olde days you'd have everybody stay inside, at which point they'd dance around the entrances causing job cancellation spam, getting in the way of the military, and generally being less than ideally protected, not to mention the bits where they'll hang out under a cliff and consider it inside, and I shudder to think of how this would have interacted with the caverns.

The idea in current versions is to make an emergency shelter for your dwarves. Like much of DF, planning ahead has big payoffs in terms of survivability, but if you're like me you'll just lay down a burrow on the meeting hall/food stockpiles when it comes up. Then, you assign that burrow to the Active alert via the military screen and set the civilian alert level from Inactive to Active. All nonmilitary dwarves will go to that burrow and ignore everything outside it.

Once you know what you're doing with it, you'll be making different fallback stages from "The currently excavated fortress" to "the meeting hall/bunkers" to "The emergency bunker, first dwarf in pulls the Lockdown Lever", and you'll be able to set up alerts to have your military do things like automatically deploy to different burrows (a burrow by the entrances to make dwarves defend the gates, for example) and so forth. It can be difficult to learn, but is amazingly flexible and quite useful once you get it- is true of the military screens in general, and DF as a whole, actually.

Your militia commander creates squads and chances are he's the leader of the first squad. so all subsequent squads are created by him.
