Your military will only function if:

1. You create the squad
2. (Personal choice, here) You go to SUPPLIES and tell them they don't need to bring water or food with them, else they'll faff about for years looking for waterskins and backpacks.
3. You assign the squad a uniform that has a weapon choice with it.
4. You go into the squad's schedule and CLEAR IT ENTIRELY.
5. You designate an area for training (done from armor rack/weapon rack)
6. You designate an area for Individual Equipment and Squad Equipment (usually where your weapon/armor stockpiles are).

Your squad of X dwarves will stay in civilian mode, but spend their timing training in a 'Perform Individual Combat Drill' 24/7. To get them into combat mode, you just have to go S -> (a, or squad's actual letter) -> m and then select an area near the enemy. They'll immediately transform into their uniforms and charge over with whatever weapon they're drilling with (which is usually with a preference towards their actual skillset; but oftentimes they'll take what they can get).

Thank you
is the Individual Eq. Space Important?
i created a room just for the individual Eq. for every squad.
i cant test it because after setting up the dragon attacked, beated my whole army(atleast the REAL dwarfs that didnt ran away) and got killed by a stray dog...

luckily the game was as suprised as i was and crashed, whatever, its an buggy release, i expected something like that (but the timing was VERY bad)

My militia commander won't equip his armor. It might have to do with me using the "Specific" button.

#4 isn't necessary if you don't use alerts.  #6 isn't necessary at all.  For #2 I let them carry a waterskin with water or booze (backpacks in 31.03 used to lead to abandoned food in the barracks filling the place with miasma - I haven't bothered since then.).  As your arsenal dwarf gets better at their job the rate of mis-equipping will fall to near-zero.  I give the job to my manager, since it uses the same skills, and it's easy to get a good manager just by starting lots of tiny jobs.  1 rock block, 1 rock block, 1 rock block...

i mixed my nobles a little bit, my arsenal dwarf is my broker and my leader is my manager(as far as i remember)
i would like to know more about the miss-equips, an unexperienced arsenal dwarf is sending the WRONG Eq to the troops?
of what do we speek here, wrong items like chain instead of leather?
giving the soldier not the best-currently-available weapon?

In my experience it's more common for soldiers to just not pick up one gauntlet, boot, or helm.  In a typical early game, I'll have a squad of 10 dwarves with 10 suits of metal armor made for them.  After three months the armor stockpile will still contain a helmet, a couple of mismatched gauntlets, and a boot.  But after the arsenal dwarf gets some experience in a year or so, it might be down to just one gauntlet.

I have a question from last night.

I hit bituminous coal just a few z-levels down last night. The wiki says it can be refined using a smelter into coke, which can be a substitute for charcoal, and having little wood natively on in my region, I was overjoyed. However, whenever I fire up the smelter and try to open up the "a"dd task menu, I'm told I lack a fuel source.

Secondly, has anyone else noticed that if you wait until after you have talked to the liaison to do your trading, the goods you requested for the next caravan will show up immediately? I need to test it again to see if I am also receiving top dollar for their requested goods.

You still need charcoal as fuel to make coke as far as I understand. If I remember correctly it does result in 3 coke so there is a net gain.

Ah thanks. A pity, though. I'll have to start importing more wood.

So long as you have one log you can move onto the coal now.

Each unit of coal takes 1 unit of fuel to refine into coke, producing 3 units of fuel for a gain of 2 each time. The first unit of fuel probably needs to be charcoal from a log, but after that you can use the coke refined from coal itself to produce more.

So basically just get one log, use it for the first unit of coal and then use the products from that to make more and more and more and more and more and more and more...

How to Archers Equip Quivers?
I finaly 'found out'(wiki) how they use the archery range and now they whont equip quivers(since i cant set it up in the eq screen)

EDIT
they(archer squad) picked up their quivers as i removed the rations and thus the reason of carrying an backpack.
does the equiped backpack block the slot for a quiver?

btw, they got a quiver but now they refuse to pickup their given ammunition^^

Don't bother.  Marksdwarves are essentially non-functional at this point.  You can train their skills by making them hunters, but everything combat-related is bugged atm.

i saw that as all my soldiers ran away from the dragon instead of following the order and attack him
