Search the magmawiki for biome that page has all info you need. View the biomes of an embark area with f1-fx keys the option only shows when theres multiple biomes in the embark area so make it bigger to find areas with multiple biomes easier.

Why won't my new migrants move to the dining hall, which is also configured to be a meeting hall? They'd rather sleep outside, without food, and starve to death? It worked for a while, but now it just seems to... not do that.

Why, it's because the brook isn't actually a brook, but a river! Go me! Bridge is being built as we speak!

I honestly didn't notice, because everything was rolling around fine. It wasn't until the tantrums started that I noticed a slew of ragged dwarves fighting near the edge.

I'm trying to make a flooding room.
How do I make a presure plate signal last longer than a single step?
How do I revert the orientation of a door? (always open, when trigged by pressure plate it seals shut)

Make the plate trigger a chain reaction that take some times to execute. In example, open a floodgate which cause water to be pumped into a small room where in the corner is the true plate.

How do I revert the orientation of a door? (always open, when trigged by pressure plate it seals shut)
Use floodgate, I guess?

You can learn about more elaborate uses of plates and triggers here.

A quickie.... Any quick guide to actually enabling hospital care? I have set up the requisite hospital zone, the only thing I'm short of is plaster and thread due to some accident with my rope reed farming.

However, apart from a quick diagnosis, I have been unable to get any of my dwarves to actually do anything apart from feed/water my patient. Is there a "fixed" order, where wound cleaning/suturing/etc needs to take place before immobilisation?

Similarly, how does one actually get wound cleaning to happen? I got soap, I got EVERYTHINg...... I can't seem tog et the soap into the hospital and into the patient wound!

1) Make sure you got those jobs enabled. And there's no order for those tasks. I've seen wound cleaning done last cause I failed to make the bucket in time. The guy died of infection tho... probably should have got it done earlier.
2) Bucket & water source, and enabled wound cleaning job

It is enabled. The water source isn't in the hospital burrow, but I disabled all auxillary labour for another dwarf intended for wound cleaning and he hasn't picked up any bucket to drag water/soap to the patient yet.

Maybe a longer run time of a few more days might get it worked out, but I just hoping that the immobilisation/etc isn't done in order or something. Cause if that's so, I'm screwed until I open up the caverns to get those silk threads... So far, I left it closed so as to prevent my cats/FB from getting in while I'm optimising my military.

immobilization requires a traction bench. go to the mechanic's workshop and order a traction bench [ R ]
(it will take a chair/throne, a chain/rope, a mechanism. maybe something else I'm missing.)
then build it next to the guy's bed.

Oops! I forgot to pack kittens, and now rhino lizards are violating my food supply! Is there anything I can do to kill the little buggers?

Ah, thanks for reminding me. These fellows can supposedly eat through barrels, and (bah!) due to the Flora and Fauna mod, most migrants tend to bring pigs and chickens, rather than cats. Come to think of it, I haven't seen a cat adopted since I began using it... hopefully I can change that in the raws.

Help! URGENT!
I just started digging my pump stack system and suddely all my dwarfs got stuck, they have their picks but they don't mine even walls next to them, they are already dehydrated and starving. Why aren't they digging?

Edit: I restart the game from a previous season and tried to dig again, this time they digged and die of thirst, why don't they come back to eat, drink? They keep digging down until death.

uh, what? maybe you... I dunno.
Possibilities:

* Your dwarves have picks and don't mine (they could be reserved for someone else) -> forbid and unforbid them (after pause-unpause)
* Your dwarves keep digging down and not coming up (you're probably digging wrong) -> post a few screenies. are you using channels/ramps or up-down staircases along the side? or are you digging the pumpstack without any access route?  :D
* Your dwarves are starving (they don't have food! oh noes!) -> check [ z ] stocks and report back to us
