In order to equip one of my axedwarves with boots, would i have to forge 2 high boots or does giving the order to forge 1 make a pair?

I need ideas for an early threat detection system.  Ambushes dont get noticed until their frighteningly close to my fortress which can easily be fatal for unlucky dwarves, and my military is a mob of bafoons that goes to sleep the second goblins show up.  Ideas?

A method I've had great success with is to set traps up around the perimeter of your fortress. Hidden ambushes that hit a trap decloak, and by putting those traps well away from for your fortress gives you extra time to react. You can increase the effectiveness by creating bottlenecks around high-traffic map areas and filling them with traps. I like cage traps for this purpose since it guarantees that one ambusher is out for the fight, and it also generates a steady supply of wild animals to tame/train/eat. Mature fortresses often see an array of weapon traps take their place, since they do not need to be reloaded.

From a recent succession game:

chained baby elephants (GOD SO MANY!!!) and/or puppies/wardogs in the corners of the map between sieges. chained war elephants at the gates after a giant entrance.

And for repelling those sieges, just keep those titans you have laying around, with cages linked to levers, and a recapture point. :)

Btw, thanks for the help earlier, TolyK. I had actually forgotten all about autosave. >>

hehehe

well I love using giant traps against goblins. I've only survived enough to get 5 sieges (easily fended off each time. don't ask how i die). if anyone's interested I can give examples. some of them are borrowed/modified from the wiki, which is a GREAT place to go for ideas. and the goblin-grinder too.

How come whenever the goblins bring a general or law-giver to my fort with a siege they start fighting with each other usually killing said general/law-giver?
It's getting better even in this fort, the goblins have no law-giver and now a goblin diplomat has arrived? wth?

The edge-of-map battle is called a loyalty cascade and is a known bug, because the enemy status and/or the former civ is never removed from the kidnapped law-givers. The attacking goblins will attack their law-giver at once, thereby becoming enemies of their own civ, and battle each other until only one stands, which will quite often bleed to death shortly afterwards. As for the diplomat, I don't have a clue, but you could soon be able to trade for handmade goblinware.

Oh that would be sweet, my master lasher would love to upgrade his crappy human iron whip to a shiny goblin silver whip (at least i hope so cause he might be attached). I just hope there won't be another siege until the dwarf diplomat is finally done promoting my baroness to the next level.

You need a high enough pop and enough wealth i'm not sure if the information on the wiki is accurate since i usually get the baron (1st noble the rest are upgrades for him) with about 100 dwarfs and about when sieges start. When in doubt just build paved gold roads and always make the dwarf caravan leave with a big profit. The dwarf diplomat should then bring another screen during (or after? can't remember) the usual trade agreement talk asking you to suggest a dwarf for barony. From here the dwarf can be promoted to count and supposedly duke every year. I didn't get the duke on my last long game however as the king arrived first and then pretty much nothing happened, not even dwarf caravans.

edit:
The goblin diplomat has now started talking to my baroness  :D
"Greetings noble dwarf. There is much to discuss."

edit2:
aw snap i knew the line when he said i carved a pleasant place out of the rock.
He's infact the human civilization law-giver  :-\
just happens to be a goblin.

Is there away to find a list of plants available in your embark area?
Or the possible monsters that could appear? ( not cavern related just above ground creatures such as elephants or cougars )
