Ooh, a bunch more.

I'm very happy I posted this thread,
as now I have a few good titles to wade through.

Oh yeah one more, Penumbra series is creepy extreme.

Play it in the dark with headphones of course. I think you can get the first one for free now.

It took that many replies for Penumbra to come up?
That game is pretty...nightmarish.

Oh, and I second System Shock 2.
I've had some "fun" times with that game.

So you think those two are the best listed?

I'll try all of these once I get the free time.

I saw this topic and thought this. Definitely recommend it. If you actually plan to beat the first (the second is better, but the first is alright) then don't play the second before you beat it. The second explains the entire story in it's intro.

I'll have fun going through all of these at some time.

Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth is thick in atmosphere. Unfortunately it can be a buggy and frustrating game to play.

HL1 mod:
Afraid of Monsters Director's Cut

The monsters are at the bottom of the uncanny valley, the lights are off or low, your flashlight has VERY limited batteries, ammo is low, and it's kind of uncanny throughout.

Pro tip:
Get the flashlight hotkey on the mouse, and flick it on and off sparingly. Don't leave it on for longer than a second or two... which also adds to the horror factor, but you won't run out of batteries that way.

Reminds me a little of some of the levels of Doom3.

Silent Hill games (Silent Hill 1 in particular.) There's nothing like running around in a fog filled city, with a radio that crackles when monsters get near to build up the suspense.

Arx fatalis. Incredible atmosphere right there, and a very good rpg.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Some background: Its set in a fantasy world, where saving the world is too late. The "apocalypse" has already happened. The sun flared out, and the races of the world were forced to unite in an attempt to survive, and carve a new world underground in some ancient dwarven mines.

That last one sounds really epic.
I'll try really hard not to overlook it.
