Atmospheric or Suspenseful Games
« on: January 31, 2010, 04:16:25 pm »

Okay, I've itching for a good game, with a mysterious, suspenseful, frightening, morbid, strange, sad, or generally deep atmosphere.

I'm going to list all the ones I can think of.
If there is something I haven't mentioned that fits well on this list,
feel free to post a screen.

I'm excited to see the upgraded version of Dear Esther in production, just a general overhaul of the terrain and graphics and such and other fixes. Already a marvelous piece of work.

As for contributing to this thread: there's definitely something to be said for the fog riddled streets of Silent Hill

System Shock 2.

I've found Morrowind to be this way.

Ah, another good looking game.

I would have mentioned Silent Hill,
but then this would have turned into something ugly.
"This game has the ugliest/goriest zombies, so it must be the most scary."

I love Silent Hill though, don't be fooled.
It's just that a lot of people don't understand WHY I like it.
And the latest SH game is crap.
They just ripped off some of the Condemned bosses,
and there were no chilling parts.
It was generally just unsettling at best.

Some of the caves in TES IV Oblivion were pretty creepy. The pressure plates and tripwires swinging spiked balls into your face in a pitch-black room don't help very much.

I agree with that, but it isn't really worth playing TES-O just for that.
I got my fair share back in my first play through.

Half Life 2 mod.
It's pretty awesome, but not for everyone.
Most people are upset or disappointed with it.

Is that one done by the same guys who did Myst,
or the guys who did the Frankenstein - Mummy pack?

Those two games weren't terrible, but not amazing.

Neverwinter Nights for sure. The game by itself is typical DnD hack in slash. But if you go online, you can really sink your teeth into some Grade A Roleplaying servers.

The one I'm thinking of in particular is Escape from the Underdark. A roleplaying server taking place in the depths of the Underdark, where a group of escaped slaves have created a small refuge from the remnants of an old Gnomish city. Death is permanent without a ressurection, and magic is highly restricted so as not to alert the Creatures of the Underdark drawn by magic. The government is player run, and very cut throat. With DMs modifying the world around player actions and choices. Though the object of the game is to escape, which a grand total of 12 players have managed to do.
