For that specifically, basically just that you should make sure that you've got enough jump drive capacity to evacuate everything at the same time, and that the tender(s) don't get blown the fuck up while you're in the other system. Long range and maintenance lifespan help. Don't deploy unless you actually know something's there.

What do you mean "deploy?" As in, don't send ships in-system or don't send the escorts away from the tanker?

Any tips on millitary vessels for first extrasolar exploration?

Don't use them.  That is my advice.  Military vessels are wasted when you don't know the number and abilities of your foe.

Yes, if you bring a single ship, it won't be enough. If you bring a fleet, you will burn so much fuel it is worth a couple explorers in minerals.

Mind, before the fuel change I had a game where I would explore every new JP with a carrier group, after having lost one too many explorers (I used bigger, more expensive ones back then as well).

Thanks for the advice. I'm also running into problems terraforming - I have 10 terraformers on the planet, but 0 atmospheric change rate. What's causing this?

Also, is there any way to lower atmospheric pressure?

Do you have population to man the terraformers?
And did you enter which gases are added/removed?

IIRC that's a bit buggy--order them somewhere else, increment 5s, then order them back to the planet.

Remove gasses from the planet.

Same here, i had a full task group with flagship/branch/escort/bla bla bla keeping an eye on the system while surveyor were doing their thing... now i just send small size surveyor as *flare* they are expandable and use them to get some basic information on the ennemy, number of salvo's, size of missile salvo's, damage etc. Once i got enough information i go back to the drawing board, pick up the latest design and tweak them, refit my fleet and off to combat with more specialised fleet. i even use a small squadron of fighter on escort mode between missiles and my fleet so they can PD the missiles, same with smaller sized patrol ship with thermal reduction engine so they dont get picked up by thermal missile such as those the *spoiler* uses. My last game where i had to fight the *spoiler* i had a decently big fleet with lotsa AMM. I was doing fine untill i ran out of AMM... then i realised that i had soo much god damn point defense once i had my fleet correctly setup i could had just go without AMM at all. Then once they ran out i sent my small squadron and realised that my main fleet didnt even had time to reach the ASM range that my fighter had killed all the *spoiler* ship.

Im learning more and more about the game and i look forward the new maintenance system too!

Minecraft UI is very simple. There's only so many ways you can implement "simple" without copying something. We also gonna complain that it uses WASD?

Oh man, I have a population gap a mile wide. 100% of the 4 million colonists are in agriculture, and so there's nobody to man the terraformers that would let them have to do less work. Damnit.

edit: If I mount a terraformer module on a ship and aprk it in orbit, does that bypass the farcial "100% of colonists are farmers and not a single one will terraform ever"?

Its probably best to start with terraforming ships, otherwise, you will have whole lot of farmers and none for manufacturing... (service too)  This planet is probably one of those high cost ones?
5x-20x colony cost Purple or more likely +20x colony cost black. (The colony cost I spit out here may not be accurate, but yea, you get the idea?)

Yes, terraforming modules (and mining modules and maintenance modules, and whatever other modules there are that I can't remember) are run by the crew of the ship, not the planetary population. And it's not literally everyone is a farmer, it's people who need to be working to keep themselves and others alive. Fixing holes in infrastructure, running air filtration... And it's completely possible to avoid that problem anyway: don't colonise very high cost worlds.

Venus was the only other world in my solar system with more than 10,000 of any mineral. Also I like the idea of beating venus. Venus is a terrible place.

EDIT: Venus colony has been made irrelevant by the discovery of a world with 500k of each resources at earthlike habitability in the nearby system.

Terraforming Venus is a century-capstone project for when your terraformers have nothing better to do.  :P

Seriously though just drop automines and a mass driver.

I feel like the game is giving me a bit of love to make up for the fact that my 7.00 game put me in a six system cul-de-sac behind a Class 4 Nebula (which was admittedly very interesting in narrative terms, but unfortunate for those poor Armor-1 civilian designs).  My opening system was surrounded by four star systems, three of which had Cost-0 worlds (albeit one trapped around a secondary star some obscene distance away), one of those with a Destroyed Outpost, and just a vast open expanse as I kept moving outward.  My, but things are looking rather pleasant for the Lerosian Union.
