Just started playing, am am having a blast.

On the other hand, my Sol system has very little off-earth resources, so I'm preparing to send an exploration fleet (megatanker, civilian jumper, survey ship, escort cruiser) through a jump point.

Any advice on making a cruiser/exploring jump points?

Î usually just send my exploration ships (grav and geo survey vessels) through. If there is some big bad behind the gate they usually find it. And replacement ships are relatively cheap.

---
For some reason every trip to that sweet sweet 0 colony cost planet next door to Sol created its own colony. So now I have 6 colonies with about 120k pop each. Is there a way to combine them? Using colony ships is not an option, as some precursors followed me through a jumppoint and are now in control of the system for the medium term. They also blew up my only colony ship. I hope the civilians will stay clear of the system.
I will need some combat ships now. Unfortunatly I wanted to use mainly lasers, and haven't got a singe energy weapon specialist about 20 years in (with 3 academies). So I haven't done that much military research. As a PP scientist took a while to appear as well, I only have ion engines. But the stellerator is in development, and then magneto plasma isn't too far off.

It's not possible yet. Notably enough, that sort of population combination is one of the slated features for 7.20.

Got too impatient to wait for 7.20, started a new campaign with a goal of starting no wars with NPRs as a change of pace.

Once you've established that you're not going to get blown up immediately (via fodder exploration sensor ships) and have the points in the adjacent system detected, I suggest then to move your first freighters through and plonk down some Deep Space Tracking Stations on an unassuming asteroid that you don't think is going to be much for resources. It'll let you get a really good pair of eyes on the system, especially if they're near a jump point or some paths in the course of such, and are low profile if you don't stick them with a population. Very good idea to do this with all systems you want some kind of eyes on, which would really be any systems with landable bodies in them.
Without landable bodies, or if you just wanna be EXTRA SECURE on jump points, i suggest using sensor buoys.

Its easy to understand once you have managed to get past the first cliff. Getting past that cliff can, thankfully, be eased by those two LPers.
Err, LP = online videos, and I [my net] can't handle online videos.
...Is there any kind of newbie help guide or at least an instruction manual so I know what the many-options-available-upon-start mean? :D This game looks amazing [and I've little time in my schedule to play x_x]!

The wiki is more down than up, so I guess just posting here any questions you have is as good as any plan.

It's not, strictly speaking, intended to be informative, and is several versions out of date because the OP didn't want to start over or try to hack the save into working, but there's a screenshot LP on the Something Awful forums that's been running for years that would probably help with a lot of the basics. I don't think they currently have the paywall up, so you should be able to read it here.

Note: LP does NOT mean "online video", even though both of the ones mentioned earlier are. Just as many, if not more, are screenshot based.

Does Aurora autosave regularly or does it only save when you close the game?

Since it's database-based, every tick effectively saves the game. There aren't savefiles as such, beyond the distinction between different campaigns.

Phew! That's good! That means I didn't just lose four hours of work on my save!

I was thinking about this the other day. Is the constant saving after each turn bad for my harddrive? I am considering useing a ramdisk to play aurora.

I don't think it's bad per se, but I suspect you'll get much better performance using RAM.

I like the aurora 7 direction, especially all the streamlining happening. with the maintenance ease coming in 7.2, I might have another run of this!

Agreed. I'm much happier to see all of this than I would have been for Aurora 2 or Newtonian Aurora.
