I think it is disabled from the human players as it is currently over powered.

My Jump Helper ships had jump drives that were built to jump things up to 8000 tongs. But when I tried to use them it kept giving me the message that some other ships were to big.

Is there a bug, cause it refused to jump my 5900 ton missile cruisers. I think it refused to jump them because the jump helper ship itself was only 4600 tons.

Yep, that's exactly it. In fact, I think the error message is pretty explicit about that fact. Ships can only jump ships smaller than them.

Also note that JDs use HS for measurement, rather than tonnage. You could, for example, have a jump tender of 24,985 tons squadron-escort a ship of 25,000 tons, as they both round to the same HS. There's no point to building jump tenders smaller than the drive capacity; I tend to use them as sensor & LRM platforms to fill space and give them something to do.

Oh cool thanks, gotta redesign my entire military now :D

I'm just gonna say screw it anyway, its a huge hassle to split fleets up into five ship groups. Jump drives for everyone!

Just to point out, you really only NEED to do squadron transits if you're doing an assault through the jump point.  If you're not jumping into combat, all you really NEED is one ship with a (big enough) jump drive.  Move it to the jump point (either side), and then you can give as many other non-jump ships as you want "standard transit" orders to jump through that point...

ED:  That's a LOT of build points and shipboard space that could be used for other things, not to mention a ton of minerals.  It would just about double the build points and size of my grav/geo survey ships which get zapped a lot.  I already hate to lose those things, I'd cry if I was losing jump engines too.  Early on my usual method is to build Jump Tanker/Tenders with tons of fuel and spare parts, shuffle those among the jump points to transit the cheap grav/geo ships.   In a pinch I could mass them to squadron-jump my early combat ships, but it really doesn't come up because the initial designs are too crappy and too few to be doing any kind of jump point assault.

Or you could do entirely with jump gate construction ships and never build a single jump capable ship. The biggest downside is that tactical retreats from new system with an enemy are impossible. But if you need a tactical retreat - you are most likely already screwed and will not reach jump point in time anyway.

The theoretical value of squadron transit as opposed to standard transit is in that few hundred k km (that would be Mm, megameters) that you will appear away from enemy jump point picket. In real Aurora games enemy jump point pickets are non-existent or extremely rare. Nothing prevents you from LARPing them of course.

It isn't uncommon for enemy ships to trail you back to your entry JP, and if they don't have jump drives, they'll quite often just sit there. As noted, there is also the problem with fleets being trapped in a system without a tender if you go for nothing but gates. That aside, having to wait on gate construction for every single point would cripple exploration and expansion; at the very least you want jump capable survey ships/survey ship carriers.

You also seem to be working from the assumption that running into something you can't handle is equivalent to running into something that can outrun and overpower your ships, which really isn't the case beyond early, low-tech exploration. Unless you're finding dozen of wormholes, by the time you're in the midgame, you should at the very least be able to match Precursor speed (and shoot down Soldiers). But if you don't have jump tenders, that looong wait for gate construction will hurt.

my gate builders double as jump tenders for that reason; I use the small module, as while they're at the jp, they count as a working gate so I've no hurry to finish the construction

They have military jump drive? Because civilian jump drive can't let through ships using military engines. And such a large military jump drive would be prohibitively expensive.

How many systems do you guys normally search before finding an enemy? Normal settings. I'm itching for a fight.

Could be 1, could be 10. Precursors are fairly common, so you're bound to encounter them eventually.

Well, personally I've got 5 Precursors after exploring 55 systems. No Star Swarm as far as I remember. No NPRs either (30% gen chance). So it's all down to random luck.
