Yeah you really don't need a crapton of fuel early on. Only start worrying about it when you've got multiple fleets running to and fro.

Also, on a related note: Does anyone know if civilian ships need to be refueled, or do they just magically have fuel?

I feel like the dev intentionally made it so Sorium (?) runs out first on Earth, all three of my real games I've ran out of it first. On my most recent game, it ran dry on Earth in about a decade. Luckily, Titan has 18 million tons, though.
You'll want to stop refining it into fuel pretty early on. I stopped once I had 50 million liters of fuel, which has lasted me years so far.
If I stop now, I will probably have enough fuel to last a decade or more. All I have really running right now is the jump gate builder setting up gates, the grav sensors looking for more points and the freighters dumping mines on Titan.

It does help you save Sorium early on. I can't really say whether Sorium is set to run out early... my homeworld had 200k of it and the superjovian in my system has 168 million units.

Right then-How do I refit ships to a different, more advanced class?

Retool a shipyard for that class then use the refit option from the dropdown and select the class you're refitting from, then pick a ship that is present

Screw that, Solid Core Anti-Matter Drives all the way!

Which take a very, very long time to research.

Still, they are made of awesome.

@ Tarran: Never got that far. Kept getting bored with an endless string of no-value systems XD

Newest game looks like a keeper though: Alpha Centauri has two 2.00 cost planets, both of which require a minimum of terraforming, and is packed to the brim with resources (typical amounts run into the hundreds of millions...per planet!). Another system, Ross-some-number, has another 2.00 planet which is filled with sorium, and has two gas giants also packed with the stuff. I named the habitable planet "New Arabia", just for the lulz.

Did you check to see if Alpha Centauri has aliens in it?

What, what the hell? I'm gathering data about my own ships?

If there are any, they're keeping quiet. I did check the two potential worlds with thermal and active sensors, and haven't found anything. Next step is to look for precursor ruins with geology teams, but that will come later.

Beware of sentient fungus on one of them.

Hmmm... I think I might've had that before. In the Contacts tab of the System View screen, is Civilian Transponder Status set to off?
