Unless of course they were precursors or other nasties.

Also, yay! My Gaia class terraforming ship is in production! .102 atmos per year @ .003 atm/y research level!

Edit: Uh... Star swarm are the ships which are 800 tons and move at 10,000 km/s right? Because if so, I just encountered them 1 jump away from my homeworld. With a fleet consisting of a light escort, a sensor ship, and a 1,000,000 ton arkship. This will not end well if said arkship gets devoured. D:

Edit 2: ... Why is my ship not firing AT ALL despite being right next to the fleet? Beam ship with 64k lazers, 64k fire control, but nothing is being fired.

um... yea... i assume you have autofire on since your complaining about things NOT fireing... assuming your within the range to attack [the maxrange is also effected by Electronic warfare..]..
The problem could be.. you dont have enough power to use the laser [you need powerplants] if you check the combat screen i think it says power ##/##   #=a number, somewhere, which would show you if you have enough...
Or a common mistake is you can't target something unless you have it on ACTIVE SENSORS, then you lock using a target system.
Well. Try manually firing if autofire doesnt work. [autofire is a relatively new and bug ridden feature that should be avoided unless your fighting... well thousands of little ships like starswarm and you dont want to manually traget every single one]
...If you cant manual fire then something is fundementally flawed in your ship design... or you arn't close enough to target.... You can post the ship specs if you want, and i' or someone else will tell you if its a ship design flaw.

Ah, sensors for starters... But where is the bit that says how much power is required? Thus far I've just been guessing and putting a few powerplants per ship.
As for specs:

It says underneath Jump distance and ratings inside Power Systems. I.e "Power required".

Also, you have 6 less power then what's needed for all your ship's weapons to recharge at full speed, meaning at least one of the turrets will take longer to recharge then normal. You should fix that next time you update that design.

Yea, you need 66power, you have 60..
If you look along the system view the button that looks like a crosshair is the combat overview, which will be the main thing you use during combat. So.. Look at everything there and mouseover tons of things. [i think you can assign things with a autoassign somewhere, but it may not assign them right].

I'm not 100% but i think you only need them on active sensors of "a" ship while your firing at them... as ships share sensor data. I don't think i've ever designed a offensive ship with no active sensors at all though... so i'm not sure.

Your ship may have other issues though.. the failure rate is way too high, i cant imagine it getting very far without breaking down and needing repairs.. if its just sitting in orbit 24/7 it wouldnt matter that much though. [you can add engineering to decrease failure rate and increase maintance stores.. which are autoused to repair parts that break.. your ship will lose a part every 0.02 years.]

But yeah, also make sure everything is good on that combat screen... that your lasers are assigned to a fire control for example
Edit: *shakes fist* ninja'd slightly.

Yeah, I've turned off the maintanence failures to avoid such frustrations. At least for my first game.

Edit: yep, finally have confirmation they are indeed star swarm. Confirmed by a mostly useless fleet of ships sent to take them out... which my lazers should be able to do if I'm lucky. Seems its a fleet of 13 starswarm 800 ton ships vs 4 useless ships, 1 wasp, and one 100,000 ton Aklay warship. Which of course only has power and firing stations to use about 1/3 of its weapons, but meh, minor details... At least it has about 1k shields and level 30 armor. :)

Let the Second Battle of the Flailing Idiot Ships begin!

...You know masons, which is what the StarSwarm carry, bypass both armor and shields right? :P

So it would seem. But at least I've got had 4 crappy gunships w/o weapons of any sort for meatshields. And the swarm is was only 13 ships. But now they were killed by my point defense lasers. :D
Here's the ship (which not to worry has a v2.0 currently on the way which actually works). Once per 15 seconds the entire 30x2 laser bank fires and kills an enemy ship. With the occasional 20x4 laser bank firing.

That's the mother ship. Personally I've never fought it before in close range (I just pelted it from a distance with missiles because it's so slow) so I don't know if it has any weapons. How about you find out for me? :P

Also, the mother ship has very strong shields, so watch out, if it has masons it could cause a lot of damage to your beam warships if they're slower then it and can't outrun it while it advances.

Also2, I've noticed that your ship only has one fire control. What are you going to do when multiple enemy ships come in range and you can only fire at one at a time? You really should have more fire controls so your weapons can fire at multiple ships at a time.

O you poor poor soul :(

That annual failure rate means it will break down twice a day.

I forgot whether it loses function of part of itself, or just sucks resources out from your resources.

Also, has anyone made a detailed tutorial?

Apart from those that Steve's already made? Don't think so.

As I said, V2 is on the way... It has something like 15 fire controls. Now, time to figure out what sort of weapons that mothership has! :D

Edit: Its shields seem to be a bit too powerful for my lasers to penetrate. Range 151k and closing; it hasn't fired yet.

Edit 2: maybe not... Current range 88k, lasers do more damage at closer range, heh.
Also, it has opened fire on my dead-in-the-water ship away from which the Aklay is running. Range on the mothership appears to be about 64k, and the weapons seem to be all maeson weaponry. 10 hits on the ship in the first salvo. Another 10 hits 5 seconds later. 17 another 5 seconds. 10. [little ship's life ends here] Moral of this story, stay out of the 64k range or prepare to get lots of maesons in your face.

Just so you know, it's not maeson. It's also not mason.

It's meson.
