I feel my depression deepening everyday. Should probably see a psychiatrist soon. Although, it's really strange because there's no known source of the depression when it comes to things that have happened to me as of late (or the past year for that matter). Sure, there are things I'm slightly upset about, but nothing to make me this down.

That's depression for you. Doesn't even have the common decency to give a nice solid reason for its existence. :/

advice

don't give advice, give sympathy

Something I learned in Rehab: If you're trying to give advice to someone while they're talking about what's wrong, you are NOT helping them. Best thing you can do is just listen, unjudgementally. Just listen to them. Be sympathetic, but do not try to fix their problems. For one, that's pretty codependant of you, for two, if someone's crying, and you tell them it's okay, or go up and hug them or whatever, you're telling them (Subconsciously) "I am uncomfortable with your feelings, please stop feeling."
You listen, and if they want to hug you/whatever, let them initiate it. Otherwise you shut them down. Same with getting them a tissue or what have you. Let them do it, as it will let them process through their feelings. If you do it for them, they're going to shut down, and that is bad.

Yeah.

I often give advice to my friends, but we have that sort of relationship--some of them are very emotional people who value my ability to turn seemingly complex dilemmas into simple choices.  However, if there's no good way out of it, or the way out is obvious, then sympathy is definitely the right thing.

THAT SAID I SYMPATHIZE WITH YOUR FEELINGS OF FRUSTRATION

Ran into a cat on the way home from work. While it was adorable, I could not convince it to come near me, and it's very cold out tonight. So I was unable to get it to some manner of shelter.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

My boyfriend has some form of depression, how severe I do not know. Sadness that I cannot help, what do I do?!

At least he's not in it right now, but I'm worried about the future in that regard. ._.

As a person both married to someone with depression, and a slight depression problem of my own, I can tell you this.

You can feel like there is nothing you can do, and it's alright to feel that way. Don't beat yourself up over it, sometimes there simply isn't anything you can do, just make sure they know that you're there for them, and let them know that you want to help, and that you just want to know what you can do to help.
If they say that there's nothing you can do that would make a difference, then honestly, that just happens sometimes.
Just help them though it as best you can, even if that just means sitting back waiting until you can do something to help.

Don't get upset about, it happens. The fact that it's worrying you means that you genuinely care, and that's the most important thing.

Well, if that's the way it's going to be, then so be it. I'm not nursing her through her violent boyfriends anymore.
