When I was a kid I fell off a cliff into a river. I wasn't breathing when they found me, where a piece of wire had caught on my clothing and kept me from flowing downstream. Luckily an off-duty firefighter was one of the people that found me, and he was able to revive me.
That's how my mom tells it to me.

Anyway I learned to swim on Hawaii, and I'm not a great swimmer but I love just floating in the ocean with the waves.

My life is getting pretty stagnant right now. My time is about equally divided between struggling to keep my finances afloat, and wasting the time I could be spending on actually solving my problems by distracting myself from them. Gotta work on this self-control thing.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

So I was watching an episode of Law & Order SVU, and the victim was a trans woman. Of course, they immediately call her a tranny and refer to her as a he the entire episode. Yep. No respect at all. Thanks, Law & Order.

Yup. TV is... bad when it comes to sensitivity.

I think Elementary is one of the only shows I've seen that is respectful of this issue. Perhaps the only, now that I think about it.

By the way, this is pretty much my favorite Western TV show period.  Isn't it great?!  Joan kicks butt!  Sherlock kicks butt!  Moriarty kicks butt!

That's odd. There's a comedy program I watch sometimes, and despite the frequent crude jokes (commentary is provided by a mix of comedians, has-been celebrities, and TV personalities) they're usually very good at referring to transexuals by their preferred genders. You'd think a "serious" show would be better than that :/

My dad and I both agree it's basically the best new show of the season, and it quickly became our must-watch drama. The chemistry is right, the acting is excellent, the writing is excellent. All around an A+ for me, and I can't wait to see what they're going to do next season.

If you think law & order is a serious show, even of the scare quote variety, I don't quite know what to tell you Siri. It has more in common with penny actor pornography than anything of merit.

... though that's probably speaking poorly of penny actor pornography :-\

I've seen... entirely too much of L&O in passing. Watching any of it has categorically worsened my life. It makes me want to strangle its director(s), most of the time. The rest of the time, it just makes me leave the room. In case you can't tell, I rather dislike the show.

Yeah.  I just got up from a nap so I'm not feeling the most coherent right now, but everything you mentioned I agree with.  It's the BEST.

I feel incredibly f**cking old right now. Came home way too early, not nearly intoxicated enough to be comfortable. Met someone I haven't talked to much in this whole f**cking century.  :( Sometimes I wonder where the last 10+ years of my life went...

Gonna listen to music, not really in the mood for TV today, yesterday they at least had re-runs of Seinfeld and Magnum PI.

Swimming underwater can be fun, and a useful skill. The complicated part is that your nose will let water in if you don't take precautions. If you don't have goggles, you can overcome you body's reflex to close your eyes with practice too, and see normally while underwater. You may need to pop your ears as well, if you dive deep.
That's really useful, especially on a stone beach, where you have clear sight. Had a really cool experience once, standing 15-20m deep on the ocean floor with swarms of tiny fish and a moray swimming around me. Yeah, that was a long time ago...
