In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

Ran out of meds, mood plummeting, spent the morning sick and worried I was experiencing kidney failure, my work is not getting done, and the girl I saw the other day says  "[I'm] not really sure what I want from our friendship."

Not sure exactly what to make of that, but it certainly doesn't sound good. We'll see, I guess.

Found out via penny arcade that SOE's finally shutting down Infantry, which I still count to date as one of the best top-down multiplayer games I've ever experienced.

Maybe freeinf'll pop back up... one can hope, I guess.

I've gone too far. I've been designing a game lately for me and friends to play. Unfortunately I got too dead centered on working on it that I actually ended up basically telling one of my friends I don't have time for her.

I feel horrible for that. The game is done, but in making it I ended up letting down a friend. even if it is considered a mild case by anyone, it's a big deal to me.

Hrm, don't know the details, but understand you're not at your friend's beck and call any more than they are at yours. Taking some time for yourself to do something you're interested in is fine and dandy, so long as it's not every time.

For, in order that men should resist injustice, something more is necessary than that they should think injustice unpleasant. They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.
