Why?
Minecraft is currently going through a DDoS attack. This isn't out of the blue - far from it. People have complained about him missing deadlines before, and now that he decides to make a large update instead of the Friday updates that we used to have, a veritable shitstorm has erupted. Evidently, somebody decided to to take action and bot-rape the servers.
Now, what makes me really upset is how Notch is actually working hard to try and appease his audience, and it ended up with them simply getting more pissed off. They
just don't get it; if he doesn't do a Friday update, so what? We're getting more than we'd usually in this large update. They ignore what he's doing. To them, it doesn't matter if a thousand great things will come in two weeks; they want one great thing
tomorrow. And when they do get that, they'd get even more riled up because it wasn't what they were looking for; they wanted this thing, not that, or because they wanted more great things to show up (despite the fact that these Friday updates are not for the audience, but for himself; he codes what he finds fun, and what he can accomplish in the hours he has).
Long term planning is out of the question. So what if the company will be stunted from this, and Minecraft's chances are survival shrink? WE WANT UPDAET NAO! CODE NOTCH U BASTAERD!
And the fact that the way they retaliated (a DDoS attack of Thursday) pisses me off even more. Notch'll have less time now that he'll have to communicate with the sysops to get it running, making him code less. This is completely counter-intuitive; if you cut his time back, you can't honestly expect him to do more. And this is not Ludum Dare; he'll have to eat, sleep, relax, and all that despite what is going on here. The amount of work that is being asked for cannot be sustained.
Let me show you a quote, apparently by the perpetrator (thanks Duke):
"It's purpose is to send Notch a clear message of how the future of minecraft will turn out unless he gets to work, namely by influencing the amount of sales taking place, due to the attacks."
"We have roughly 83,000 bots available, and preserved for this seizure, we could if we wanted to keep this going for weeks, however we have decided to give it a week, and see whether or not your attitude, and commitment will change, we believe it will when money stops rolling in for the time being..."
This just goes to show what an asshat community Notch has to deal with. Seriously? Lowering sales will make him more productive? Not to mention that this is blatant blackmail, extortion, what have you - it will not, I repeat, NOT improve his productivity. Money is his lifeblood; it fuels his employees and his infrastructure. Making him struggle will only put further stress on him, causing him to write poorer code. Employee morale will drop, which will lower productivity along with it. You are not helping, no matter how much you want to with that twisted little train of thought, no matter how much you scream at your greasy monitor, no matter how much pressure you put on him, no matter how drastic of an action you take. You are simply strangling the game, and if you continue he will break eventually. And it'll all be
your fault.
