Even worse, though, are psychatrists or psychatries. They.Will.Mess.You.Up.

Psychiatrists don't "mess you up", they help you. If you keep a silly "This damn stupid and this shrink is just going to make me worse" type attitude you'll end up nowhere (and as you say, "messed up").

I don't trust shrinks simply because I get a different answer from each.  They're like astrologers in that way.  One says I'm bipolar, one borderline personality, one regular old depression, one thought I was a stuck up brat that didn't actually have any problems and one even said I was psychotic!  Get back to me when it's actually a fucking science, eh?

Wow, that's kinda annoying. I had to go to a psychologist for a bit when I was younger, a prank on family got out of hand >.>, said I had ADHD and OCD, along with some other things that would 'take more sessions to figure out'. The OCD is obvious to me, always has been, the ADHD? Not so much.

I got to agree with Pie here, as someone who has been greatly helped by a Psychiatrist they will not mess you up anymore then, say, a surgeon will.

Which is to say, yes there is a chance they will make it worse but by and away they make things better.

NONEDIT: Psychologist =/= Psychiatrist

And psychology is a very hard discipline because it works with the brain. Very hard to understand that orb of snot is sometimes.

I cannot be certain that it was an actual cause, but I do know that my best friend mentioned it explicitly as such in her suicide note.  I saw the stuff's effects on her and I want no part of that.  I understand it does help a lot of folks, but I got a bit of a bad first impression.

Psychiatrists are still meant to be quite helpful, though.  Mostly because it tends to make you feel a lot better just to be able to discuss your problems with someone.

That is not what they do.

That is what Psychologist do.

Wow, finally. Most people don't seem to realise the differance between a Psychologist and a Psychiatrist.

I would just like to clarify that I would never tell another person not to seek help from a psychiatrist/psychologist or to avoid the medications the former prescribes.  That's a personal choice like every other health-related issue and every person has to do their own due diligence.  They just aren't for me.

Psychiatrists learn to understand, diagnose, and treat mental disorders. There aren't ways to properly diagnose said conditions, so it usually comes down to something like "if you're x, y, and z, you're depressed, and if you're f, g, and h you're obsessive". I assume treatments are very similar each other too, if the cause of someone's ADHD could be hyperactivity (which comes with a few other disorders as well), give him some Ritalin, etc.

I am not hyperactive and jumpy, but I do have OCD, mild but it's there. While keeping everything spotless and clean is the steryotype of OCD, mine is more simple. It focuses on being 'even' IE if my thumb touching something in a certain way, I NEED to touch the other thumb in the exact same way to make it even.
