My laptop is functional again! As always, the solution was to exterminate Windows.

Say, have any of you ever gotten the error on Win8 where it gets stuck in a loop on boot (does something like "Preparing automatic diagnostics") and then it does it forever? And refuses to back up?

I'm starting to wonder if it's a bug that it needs to restart for updates literally every other day.

You shouldn't have bought an even numbered version of Windows.

Most laptops come with some version of Windows pre-installed.

Ah, but Windows 2000 (which was amazing at the time for anything short of gaming) was actually NT 5!   8)

It should be possible to "downgrade" from 8 to 7 on most machines, though if it's anything like the Windows 7 to XP downgrade, they'll be charging an embarassing amount.

Worth it, though.

I hate to break it to you, but Windows 8 is actually NT 7.1 as of now.

...Huh. So does that make Win10 NT 8?

What's NT? Nanotrasen? Did Microsoft get taken over by an intergalactic company when I wasn't looking?

You know how windows 95 and 98 (and ME lol) weren't actually operating systems, but fancy programs running on top of DOS?
Well, they were...

Windows NT (New Technology) was the first one that abandoned DOS and was an actual operating system.  That's why we need DosBox to run DOS games now, since DOS is no longer running.  It's also one reason why windows games for 3.1 to 98 need so much compatibility jiggering.  Windows 2000 is "based on NT" (says so on the loading screen!) in that it's actually version 5 of NT.  And all versions of desktop Windows since then have also been, under the hood, versions of NT!

Mmm I just made and ate a batch of pepper rice with ground beef.  Also got a good night's sleep finally.  Feeling really good.

XP was NT 5.1, of course. Vista was 6, 7 was 6.1, 8 was 7, 8.1 is 7.1.

After about an hour of stupid wrangling about on the phone, I've determined that Mediacom's obnoxious proprietary router management software that we have to use is a lying sack of shit, and will refuse to switch to WEP encryption no matter how much you tell it to do so. This is actually not a terrible idea, since WEP is just so awfully insecure - there should be very few people who can tell that it's lying, and who also would ever want to use WEP. But, anyway, I threw up my hands in frustration and did the absolute silliest possible "attack" on WPA2 - relying on a dictionary whose sole entry was the actual password.

So that's one homework assignment done with.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

The "even versions of windows suck" rule applies to desktop OSes made for the average consumer.

Windows 2000 was mostly designed for server and business use.

I also seem to remember something about an option to "downgrade" your windows 8 to windows 7, because so many people were upset about it. I don't remember the details though since I never purchased a computer with win 8 installed.
