Yeah, probably. FYI the synthesis (if I'm not crazy and it's stannic chloride you're trying to make) is traditionally done with Cl₂ (chlorine gas.) That probably isn't practical for you, however, and I strongly recommend you not do that. To be clear, you're trying to use aqueous HCl to chlorinate metallic tin?

Oh, never mind all that then. Yeah it's a pretty slow reaction by all accounts but that should be enough for a small amount, especially if the metal is in thin strips or small balls. If it isn't completed to your satisfaction by then, check on it every 20 minutes or so. Removing some of the finished product may also help move things along depending on the nature of the reaction.

If it isn't completed to your satisfaction by then, check on it every 20 minutes or so. Removing some of the finished product may also help move things along depending on the nature of the reaction.

Removal of product ain't helping that case. Making metallic dust from your tin pieces helps a lot.

Err, what?

@Cryxis: Throwing an oxidiser in there might help, like bleach or something. Don't do this before consulting your teacher/guardian! Otherwise heating and increasing the surface area (ie using finer tin particles) are the usual ways. Stronger acid would be good too, but I guess you won't have that on hand.
