I just got certified to breathe nitrox for scuba diving, which means I can stay underwater longer.

And go deeper to right? I really need to go diving again.

No. Nitrox has more oxygen and less nitrogen than regular air, so it reduces nitrogen buildup in the body. That lets you dive longer without getting the bends. Nitrogen and oxygen both become toxic when under enough pressure, so you need to add helium to the mix to go deeper. That's called trimix. Problem is, you can't breath trimix near the surface, it doesn't have enough oxygen. So it has its own course and certification (that I will probably do eventually).

Tldr: Nitrox only lets you dive longer. You need fancier stuff to go deeper.

Okay, so the parenthetical is actually the important part of that post. I'm not really surprised diving is complicated, but I thought the bends and really shallow diving depth were just shit that we had to deal with because we don't naturally live in water. I'm pleasantly surprised that we've managed to compensate for those things to a greater extent than I previously thought.
