I had a lonely time at a party.  I suffered through the worst second worst traffic jam I've ever seen in a city known for its horrible traffic.  The fridge is empty.  I have none of my things for a night except a slow laptop and my imagination to entertain me until well into tomorrow.

But I do have... my old cat.  My ornery old man who I love with all my heart.

I also came a hair's breadth from winning a bar Texas Hold'em tournament, shutting down the resident pro so hard he was calling me Jesus Christ for incredible turn-arounds, but this is really about the cat.

Buying only groceries that require some preparation in order to be edible was the best choice I've made recently. I'm eating less and healthier now that I can't just pour myself a bowl of cereal any time I feel hungry. On the other hand, I am hungry more often, but oh well. I've got about 30 pounds too many, so that's not exactly a bad thing. Surprisingly, I feel a lot more energetic than I have in a while, despite being hungry and low on caffeine. I guess decent nutrition will do that for you?

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

This weekend has been really good.

Spent the night with a good friend; One of the few I've met I share a sense of humour with. For the first time in three years for me, and longer for him, we both did a trip. Went on a long walk in the countryside and had each other in stitches. Listened to a lot of good music too. I don't socialise nearly enough so this was quite a treat.

To top it off there was a thunder storm night before last and while I didn't see any lightning directly the whole sky kept lighting up and the thunder was rolling furiously. It really hammered it down too.

Trying to poke my sister into watching a film with me again this weekend. We both had a lot of fun with From Up on Poppy Hill last weekend. A very charming film.

Laughed the hardest I had in years because Saltybet.

Basically, I was watching and Namek Gohan used a super, which caused a car to run over the opponent. The car was being driven by Bulma.

I didn't see the car well, and when I watch with people around I comment. I thought the car was a sleigh. So I yelled "SANTA CLAUS!"

Read in the chat a mention of Bulma. I said "oh, that's Bulma" and my brother agreed.

For some reason, this was the funniest thing that ever happened to me.

The TREE(n) function derived from Kruskal's Tree Theorem.

Math is incredibly hilarious sometimes.

TREE(1) = 1.
TREE(2) = 3.
TREE(3) = a number larger than Friedman's n(4). Now I have not found a place where it is stated just how large that is but for comparison from wikipedia, Friedman's n(3) = 2↑7197*158386 so I am going to guess it involves a lot of Knuth's up arrow notations :p

Bastion.  Yeah, the design isn't quite as OMFG amazing as it was the first two times I played it, but it's still satisfying.  More satisfying when I get the carbine again, of course, but satisfying.

The spiders are back en masse. The trees are full of them, the railings are full of them - I even had to move some that had built their web in front of the front door.

TIL you can play multiple Steam games at the same time and get trading cards for each one.
So much farming will commence.
Ok, what are those cards for, exactly? Do they actually do anything, or just guilt me into playing more?

The cards are for crafting badges. If you craft a badge, your profile gains xp and you gain some random bonus stuff. If your profile gains xp, it levels up. If your profile levels up, you get better chances to randomly obtain booster packs of cards.

The cards are also for selling. I have $3 in Steam Wallet cash, all from card sales, and this is after purchasing some other cards to finish crafting a couple badges. I just sold cards if their prices were pretty high (which means I also sold all the other cards for that game), duplicate cards that I got and a couple foils.

My steam inventory is practically only duplicates and triplicates and nothing else.

Bastion.  Yeah, the design isn't quite as OMFG amazing as it was the first two times I played it, but it's still satisfying.  More satisfying when I get the carbine again, of course, but satisfying.

I probably wouldn't call it the most fun game ever, or the most creative game ever.  But in the context of what Bastion wants to achieve as a game, and what it actually delivers, it might actually be the best made game ever, or at least sits in the category of "perfect" games, in that there's nothing about it that could be substantively improved.  Every element works just right in relation to everything else.

Although multiplayer would have been awesome, however it might have worked.  And more levels, since the game is pretty short.  And some reason to go through the same levels besides the score mode, although that'd be really hard to explain given the underpinnings of the level design.

Basically, my only criticisms of Bastion amount to it not providing enough excuses to keep playing it longer, which is a really good sign.  I'm trying desperately not to anyway, I have too many other things to do.
