In the hours of free time I do have, I've been playing through Chrono Trigger for the first time. I'm surprised how well it stands up to today's standards.

Chrono Trigger is kind of a masterpiece. It'll stand the test of time.
So true, Chrono Trigger was pretty much distilled perfection.

JC, from what I've heard people say about LoL, theres no point in public groups; you either have a good time with some other people in a skype chat with you, or ignore it altogether.

Chrono Trigger had some issues. Character imbalance was a big one; Poor ineffectual Lucca, due to her final weapon sucking. Also, no Hit tabs made her and Marle the weakest of the bunch (by far) in new game plus.

Also also, double techs were a nice idea in theory, but usually ended up useless. Triple techs were uselessness incarnate. And Tech Points in general... not so great an idea either, being just a secondary experience bar.

Nothing's perfect though~

I don't know, in the early game some of the dual techs seem pretty good. Fire Whirl makes the R-Series fight go by much faster.

I remember using Aura Whirl and Ice Sword. Volt Tackle and uh... spire? I think? Frog/chrono thing with lightning sword in the head.

That's pretty much it. Most just weren't worth using two character's turns for.

I used double techs all the time! They were great! X Strike and drop kick are very good physical techs, Ice Sword and Spire are incredibly useful, Aura Beam is an excellent healing move and Frog Flare is ridiculously overpowered.
Sure, not all double techs were actually that good, but I wouldn't say that they were useless.

Triple Techs, however... Yeah, never used those.

There was the one triple tech though that made low level games possible, the one where it basically cast Life 3 on everyone and auto-revived them if they died. Can't remember the name of it though.

I think once you get everyone's ultimate magic moves, then double/triple techs become essentially useless. But they're not all useless by far; provided you reached high to ultimate spells before any of the climaxes, then just about any spell is useful at any point. Use low level spells to save MP (unless you farmed shelters and frequent savepoints to use them), and heavy-hitters for the tougher enemies. For example, when dino raiding comes along, bolt 1 is great for taking on 1 dino at a time (especially if there's only 1 in that battle), and bolt 2 when there's a larger crowd of them, and then finish them off with luminaire or provided a strong enough weapon, cyclone, or just have everyone on the team attack.

But anyway, even in late-game, even the weakest cheap techs are still somewhat useful for some battles. If you're up against element-based enemies, the fire/ice-sword dual techs or volt bite are extremely useful and can deliver a godawful amount of damage.

It's sorta a shame there isn't a new game+ mode made in the style of FFX-2 for Chrono Trigger (even modded in). What I mean is, you keep the techs, but you start back at level 1.

As I recall, Antipode 3 was a useful double tech. At least in my experience, once the ladies match the optional character's* magic stat, optimal damage output is achieved through alternating Luminaire and Antipode 3. Flare is also the second most powerful top-level single tech in the game, after Luminaire, but again, you need to get Lucca's magic stat very high, indeed, for it to become apparent. For most of the game, the actual stats minimize the influence of tech's inherent power. Because of that, the optional character's tend to be competitive for a while, but actually fall surprisingly far behind once everyone catches up in stats.

That's all from memory, though, so I could be wrong. Absolutely loved the game, though.

*Since somebody in-thread is playing for the first time, I'm avoiding spoilers, even though the game is over 15 years old.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

I fully support the right to bear arms.  I mean come on, would you mess with a guy with four-foot long shaggy arms and claws?
