Topic re-railment!
I repopulated the antfarm which had been host to some snails! A queen and a bunch of workers now inhabit it. (as well as the snails, which were used in a science project involving redox reactions (turns out the zinc-copper reaction is sufficient to make snails avoid copper plates, but does not produce enough voltage for any lamps or LED's))
Also, My little pony friendship is magic is far better than the name makes one suspect. (as always with episodal series there's some better episodes and some you don't like as much, but overall it's quite nice)

Catching up on Chip and Ironicus' LP of Metal Gear Solid 4.  This is the most ludicrous story ever told, crammed into the most ludicrous attempt at a sequel ever made.  I remember when the game first came out, all the half-joking rumors of 90 minute cutscenes, that my die-hard MGS-fan friend vehemently denied.  Well, as in ever Metal Gear, a few minutes of fiddling counts as "gameplay" when bracketed by 30-minute treatises.

From when you first reach Big Mama's (...eugh) safehouse to when you start sneaking into Shadow Moses, the only gameplay is a couple minutes of rail-shooter, and Raging Raven who's among the shortest boss fights in the game (especially if you're just playing to win rather than for style).  Including or not those few minutes of gameplay, the entire story-laden sequence is knocking on the door of a full hour of cutscene, covering everything from Big Boss' moldy torso, to Solid Snake and Liquid Ocelot being idiots who don't know what guns are for, to the most overblown take-aim-and-reversal sequence in the history of Action.  Then, a straight twenty minutes of Snake, Otacon, and Raiden being weepy.

Shadow Moses is cool and all, if almost criminally short considering what a big deal its supposed to be (reminds you just how small and backtrack-y MGS1 was).  It never even occurred to me when seeing it (since I wasn't playing it), but that super-retarded knife-fight will be totally lost on whoever is actually holding the controller, since they have to fend off a stampede while aiming through a keyhole.  Nostalgia for melodrama's sake and melodrama for nostalgia's sake, and everybody but Snake is stupid, and Snake isn't stupid only because he's given up talking in his own game.  Heck, at one point while Naomi's chewing on the scenery, Snake isn't even facing the right way.  Then more Liquid Ocelot pretending to be the Fonz, before Raiden reminds everyone why he and Rose were terrible characters.

But smack in the middle of all that maudlin needless-self-sacrificing: Giant Robot Battlin' Action between two really old men.  It's like the best pastrami and cheese sandwich in the world, all juicy and melted, but it's way too small, and instead of tasty rye it's between two big stale blubbering shit shingles.  I have to agree with Chip's assessment, that MGS4 came into existence solely to provide a rational for Snake piloting REX in a fight against another Metal Gear, and everything just went downhill from there.
