The will of Andrew Hussie sustains them, as it sustains the rest of the universe. It just so happens that Hussie likes to also troll his fellow humans by making them vunerable to injury.

Obviously the science blast was simply not strong enough to damage her spine. She is tougher than fleshy feferi.

I mean, sollux only got blasted back by the blast, it didn't penetrate him at all.

Obviously Kanaya had some penetration, but not enough to cripple her!

Also she's a freaking vampire. That proooobably factors in.

The trolls' torsos contain a reservoir of blood and their limbs are full of spongy stuff.  To move they just pump the blood into the spongy tissue.

Trolls are obviously a war-loving race, so of course they'd be built for it. They can take blunt force trauma like a motherfucker, Gamzee (apparently) surviving a superpowered kick to the horns and a fall into some large abyss and Tavros actually remaining conscious after falling off a cliff and being paralyzed. It's only when the flesh is penetrated that they start to take it bad. When Tavros was impaled he finally kicked the bucket, and Kanaya was rather convincingly dead after Eridan scienced her to hell and back. Apparently bisection is also a good way to kill a troll, as demonstrated by Dream Tavros and Eridan.

Well yeah, even trolls have their limits. A fall from deadly heights to a human is extremely painful to a troll but nowhere near deadly. The Bard of Rage, on the other hand, has the sheer power to beat the shit out of a cosmic horror bigger than the moon. He could be using a toothpick and he'd still be deadly.

They're insectoid, so maybe they have Exoskeletons, meaning they may not have a spine there at all?

He broke the exoskeleton over his legs, and it didn't repair properly, restricting movement terribly?

They have a spine, but different? I mean, they might have it spread out, which explains the bisection kills. Kinda hard to waste a mo fo whose organs are the size of them without resorting to some real butchering.
