If you wouldn't talk about it in front your grandmother, it's not an appropriate topic for GD. Can we all agree on this rule of thumb?

Um, I'm not allowed to talk to my grandmother and grandfather about the internet since he used to be a printer.

He thinks it put all the old printers out of a job.  Printers being the people who used to help print stuff.  There are some left, but few.

"So Granny, as my adventurer entered the town I suck up on a young mother and tore her intestines out. Then I used those intestines to strange her family, and then I committed genocide in her entire family lineage. What did you do today?"

But yes, we just need stricter guidelines of what we can and cannot do. Then a clearer definition of the penalty of breaking such rules.

I can agree whit the guideline, I haven't posted anything I wouldn't have told most members of my family on the public forum (by PM is another matter. Hi Sofia!). I discussed that CP article whit my mom and grandfather just fine.
Then I cant say that my openness always ends well in IRL either, and my family is rather atypical.

I never speak to my grandmother or anywhere near her about anything.  Period.

Do I win?

Better:

Before you bring up a point for discussion, has discussion of similar points gotten threads locked in the past?

I can't speak ill of my dipwad family members around my grandmother, and I most certainly can't talk about my grandmother around my grandmother.

Besides that, my other two grandmothers don't speak much English.  But this is all just nitpicking, really.  The general concept of the idea is understood.  I'm just sad that we have to have actual semi-official guidelines now, instead of just being naturally inclined towards decency.  And this is coming from me of all people.

Also, I'll admit to the Erotic Debate thread being a bad idea, but I honestly thought there was a chance of it keeping civil.  And it almost made it, too.

Can we just disregard that grandmother idea? My grandmother is a horrible elitist bigot. I wouldn't consider the kind of shit that comes out of her mouth appropriate for a topic in this board or any other. Off the top of my head, "The Jews are trying to start World War 3" And "He seems like a nice guy, but I just can't trust a Muslim." Moving on...

Ban topics related to sex. Or fetishes. Or anything else that's controversial. Everyone keeps trying to look all tolerant on those things, and that's causing a problem. I think discussing "how do I build a computer" or "giant robots" are fine.

More then half of GD in some way can be considered controversial.  Unpopular opinions about politics, religion and even health can be seen as controversial by someone out there...

I'm only hanging around here because I like the discussions, most people are actually acceptably tolerant.  I figured it trickled down from the DF mindset.

Yeah, controversial isn't really the problem IMHO. An unpopular viewpoint won't get a topic locked under Toady's rules. And if you're offended by someone disagreeing with you on a subject like politics, you probably should just stick to the DF Forums and ignore everything else. Inaluct style mutes (ranging from overly controversial to generally being a bit of a dick) are one thing, the problem is that The Great One has drawn a very clear line in the sand here about stuff like fetish discussions and people are ignoring it.

They are only trouble. Just delete them and tell everyone to discuss the non-B12 stuff somewhere else. We do not need to go and discuss religion, politics and loli sex on this forum when there are like a billion other places to do that.

I think that there are no problems with the sub-forums in the "Finally" section right now. VN was problematic but it has been closed.

Then ban them.  It's pretty simple.  Banning might seem harsh, but if these people are repeat offenders and don't change, and they're potentially threatening Toady's revenue if they go and muck up the forum image...  Then ban them.  I don't really see where it's difficult to understand this.

For some reason I thought you didn't.  My bad, then.  I suppose reading through this whole thread is making me irritable.

I'd be pretty happy with summarily banning anyone who demonstrates that they're not willing or able to judge where the line is.  In the absence of mitigating factors, a second offense on homophobia, flaming, fetish discussion or whatever else should probably be a ban.

The main reason i acctually stay on the B12 forums is because of the other games/Finally... section. Its just way to long between releases to acctually make me bothered to take an interest in what other people have to say about DF. Its a shame I know, but its what its like.
I second this, I'm an inhabitant of Other Games mainly and I don't often come in here and read threads unless I'm bored but it doesn't seem that bad. I think the Japanese ban list thread was always going to get locked, it was pretty inevitable really considering the subject matter combined with the tendency for threads to derail here.
Anyhow we have a nice enough community here and just wiping it off would be a waste.
I very rarely go north of other games. I'd probably leave the board if finally died.

What's Toady's interest in allowing people like this to post here?

I'd be devastated if more boards were closed, as in real life devastated, as in hatemail and spamming porn on the bug reports forum via a dummy account over a proxy server devastated. Same goes for being banned. This is not because I'm a spitefully person, it's because this forum for psychodynamic and personal reasons mean very, very much to me, far more than it's healthy for a internet forum to mean to someone.

You'd be better off if you were just spiteful.  If you can't break out of what you recognize as an unhealthy situation, you should seek professional help.
