Ban topics related to sex. Or fetishes. Or anything else that's controversial. Everyone keeps trying to look all tolerant on those things, and that's causing a problem. I think discussing "how do I build a computer" or "giant robots" are fine.

Dam you tolerance! Although that is quite a good point.

Ummm, no?

I very rarely go north of other games. I'd probably leave the board if finally died.
There are some crap threads here, but there are crap threads almost everywhere (anyone still remember the Noations? or the billion multi-core threads?)

More then half of GD in some way can be considered controversial.  Unpopular opinions about politics, religion and even health can be seen as controversial by someone out there...

I'm only hanging around here because I like the discussions, most people are actually acceptably tolerant.  I figured it trickled down from the DF mindset.

The weird sexual stuff really needs to go.  It's disturbing and weird.  That can be discussed elsewhere.

I'd be devastated if more boards were closed, as in real life devastated, as in hatemail and spamming porn on the bug reports forum via a dummy account over a proxy server devastated. Same goes for being banned. This is not because I'm a spitefully person, it's because this forum for psychodynamic and personal reasons mean very, very much to me, far more than it's healthy for a internet forum to mean to someone.

Closing boards wont work, because the people that post bad things will just move to the other boards. Banning wont work, because there ill always be new people, or ban dodging. Moderators don't work, because toady dosn't want them and they'd be either to strict or eventually corrupted.
I don't think you can be rid of it, unless you turn the forums into a police state, it's the law if the internet than any community large enough will become a pool of depravity unless ruled whit an iron fist.

Personally, my suggestion is to simply discourage it the same ways that is done now, and hope for the best, I also think that if there was an official link by toady somewhere 90% could be shunted of to the new VN, which would also allow the main forums for be a little stricter ruled without it becoming unbearable.

I'd say simply MOVE any inappropriate threads to new VN, leaving one of those topic-stumps whit a stern warning and a link to the corresponding NVN topic.

That's something you should really start looking at fixing.  D:

Not that I want to see more forums get closed.  People may have taken VN too far, but it was nice knowing what boards I can just stay out of.  Life Advice has gotten too icky to be worksafe now, though.  And that's no good.

Wait, Armok, is that a threat?

Anyway, I'm not sure if Toady wants to have a "Miscellaneous porn" forum.  He probably thinks it wouldn't reflect very well on him or the community.

Indeed, that is exactly what he was talking about.  Posting material that could be illegal for public viewing.  It's really a handful of people causing the problem, so if they just knock it off, it's no big deal.

Not really, I don't want to threaten toady because he's awesome and so, and it wasn't the main intention whit the line, but I cant honestly say i was unaware of that interpretation of it.
I'd prefer it not to be considered a threat, however.

I don't really see how saying you would spam porn and hatemail could be construed as not a threat.

If you wouldn't talk about it in front your grandmother, it's not an appropriate topic for GD. Can we all agree on this rule of thumb?

Um, I'm not allowed to talk to my grandmother and grandfather about the internet since he used to be a printer.
