Fixed it for ya there. What's wrong with discussing religion and politics? We're generally a pretty mature bunch, and the ones who aren't don't seem to bother with topics like that.

I'm still of the opinion that Toady and Threetoe should give moderator powers to one or two trusty people, let them monitor the messes that pop up in GD. Nothing special, just people with some authority to say 'Don't X please' or ban people from threads. Would save them from having to get exasperated so much.

Well, I know of this.. Hentai youre taking about.. too much for my own health,
I however have my own critical view of them (not interested in rape or loli, I frown upon theese).
I also know not to post of any hentai related stuff.. oh darn.. I guess I already did it by now.. oh well..

I think Toady has something against the idea of making a mod for this place, as if he wanted to he would have done so already.

I think the community should just take some responsibility and shun this sort of thing wherever it shows up.

Not much of a point in having more moderators when you can just get rid of the forums that are causing the problems. Lately I've just kept the whole 'Finally...' section minimized because of all the fetish and loli crap.

Ignoring it doesn't really solve the problem though, so I wouldn't really care if it got locked like Various Nonsense since it seems to be going down that road more and more.  That or just start banning people.

I think this comes down really to users having to behave... I don't think more sections will need locks.

Yeah I get that Toady's said he doesn't really want moderators but this is just my opinion. I also think that Toady should let the community lend a hand with some of the grunt-work type programming that takes up loads of time but I know that'll never happen :p

It's pretty much a public forum that's slowly getting bigger. It's to be expected that an increased userbase results in more ass-hattery, even if the people involved aren't really aware they're doing anything wrong. That's why I think a couple of moderators (of good character) would be so useful, just basically to come into these threads that are getting so derailed and remind everyone of what kind of posting is acceptable. The reason they'd have to have some kind of moderator powers though is that without, half of the people they tell this to will just ignore/troll them. I think that'd solve most of the problems of threads getting hijacked and derailed without resorting to deleting sub-forums or banning users or whatever.

It's possible the fetish and loli crap came here because VN got closed. Which would mean, of course, that closing more forums would only displace the problem further...into the remaining forums. The banning people thing I can get behind. Not slamming the banhammer all over the place, but Toady seems pretty reluctant to ban anyone. I mean, if you've been muted more than once for the same reason, and it's something pretty straightforward like not derailing threads to talk about underage pornography... Hopefully people will just get the picture and follow the damn rules.

I don't think it'd be displaced any further unless more forums were added that were in-line with the 'Post whatever you want here' mantra that Various Nonsense and General Discussion hold. While I am sure a thread in the Dwarf Fortress section could still be derailed into talking about hentai or some other fetish stuff that no one wants to read about I am sure it is easier to spot and moderate than going through all the random stuff in this forum. Plus it's just more likely to come up here because you can post about anything.

In any event I'd rather see people banned than a forum locked. Also, I don't think muting people really teaches them anything or sends any kind of message; so I agree, after the first muting or whatever after that it should probably be a ban, or if it's just constantly posting shit like underage porn then it should be an outright ban.

This is pretty much people perpetuating the whole "But the nonsense will just spread!" thing. So if this fourm is taken down people will just start derailing topics in fourms that really matter just to prove that point.

I guess bans would work, but I think that should be a last resort.

Note that no one is acctualy posting underage porn, just talking about it. Two very different things. Im pretty sure posting underage porn is already a perma-ban I think.

Toady has much more patience than me.  If I were Toady, I'd drop the banhammer as soon as -con words started being thrown around.
