Oh god! I played this map until about Fall. Watch out for the Fire Man! He PATROLS the outside! He won't leave, so I can't get any more wood. Luckily, I made all the beds I needed, but I can't make any barrels or nothing.

I haven't had much time to play so I'm only half way through summer right now.
Here's an update for spring (entries getting less interesting the more tired I get  ;D)

*****

1st Granite

I seem to have been elected unofficial leader of the group (much to the disappointment of webadict) so I decide to scan the surroundings and find a place to dig in.

It's far from ideal, but this place should suffice for our needs.  A brook flows through the northeast corner and we have access to magma to the northwest, although there seems to be a lack of visible rock.  Fuck it, soil and sand can be mined out quicker, and there's no telling when those Orcs will stumble across us.  First priority is to dig in.

I set to work mining into the side of the hill, about halfway between the magma and the brook and realised that nobody else was joining me.

Why aren't they digging?  Everyone else lazes around, except one dwarf who goes fucking FISHING!  Don't they realise that we could be discovered at any moment?
I call a quick meeting and discover that nobody else knows how to mine.  WHAT THE HELL?  Am I supposed to mine this entire fortress myself?
Okay, deep breath.
Time to get to know these guys a little and see what each dwarf can contribute.

First up is myself.

I'm a miner born and bred.  That's probably why I'm leader, everyone knows that miners think deepest.

Next to speak is Jakkarra.

He's a carpenter by trade, so useful to have with us.  He also tells me that he's tinkered with crossbows before.  He's gonna have to do a lot better than tinker now.

Now for Webadict.

I've got my eye on this guy.  He seemed just a little too cheerful yesterday...
Disregarding that, I'm glad to have him.  He's got his own axe so is on woodcutter duty as well as being an all round good farmer.  Has a gift with fire and has volunteered for wood burning and furnace operating duties.

Next in line is a guy I've noticed a few times, SanDiego.

He's a mason, engraver, building designer and mechanic, although not particularly skilled at any.  Nevertheless I think I need to make it a priority to keep on the right side of him.

Now for the dwarves who are new to me, starting with one who goes by the name of Sausage.

He introduces himself as being a jeweller by trade, although he has also developed some other craft skills.  I'll probably get him making some stone crafts to trade to the dwarv humans, if they can find us before the orcs do.

The next dwarf guiltily looks away from my glare and is introduced by the others as Userpay.

This good for nothing oaf is the one who decided that this was a relaxing fishing trip, and took it upon himself to cast a line into a brook empty of fish.  After I finally get him to speak to me it turns out he was from a noble family and as such has no worthwhile skills at all!

Last in line was MarineElite, the only other female in our group.

She was apprenticed to a butcher, as well as having some skills in making clothing.  If nothing else, I'll be glad of the female company.

Add to our population two untrained dogs and two cats that folowed us for reasons unknown and that's the lot of us.  Oh, and a horse and donkey we made haul the wagon.

Next port of call is the wagon we 'borrowed.'  Hopefully there'll be some decent supplies in there.
I lifted the sheet off for a quick rummage through.  Thank Armok!  I can't guess why, but someone had left an anvil in there.  This bodes well so far.  I lifted it out carefully and placed it on the ground.
Other than that, there was nothing special.  The usual combination of food, seeds and booze (although there wasn't too much of that).  Further rummaging provided us with a spare axe and pickaxe.  No wood though.  That isn't good.

Anyway, this solves the problem of what to do with our little fisherdwarf.  There'll be no slacking off when he's working as my apprentice!

Webadict stalks off to chop us some wood as me and my apprentice begin mining the fortress.

Defence is the main priority for now, so we'll go with the classic 'L' shape entrance leading to the barracks.  Fuck it, we'll have two 'L's!

11th Granite

That done for now, I set to finding stone in order to get our workshops built up.
I dig down a layer and my heart sinks at finding only more sand.  Another layer down and we hit good solid rock.
I've got to hand it to that Userpay, he's a fast learner.  He's a passable miner already, and I have deep hopes for the lad.

14th Granite

Unbelievable!  Of all the most cursed luck!  A mere fortnight since our arrival here and already our new land is tainted by death.
The donkey has burned to death in an attack from a Fire Man.

And if that wasn't enough of a bad omen, large areas of woodland have gone up in flames.  It's as though the land itself rejects our presence.

16th Granite

Once again I must write of a loss, this time our horse.  True, we were planning on slaughtering and eating the thing, but it would have been a better end than burning in the spreading fire.

23rd Granite

Things are finally starting to look up for us now.  Today we finished work on our basic production area and now have fully functional masons, carpenters, craftdwarfs, bowyers and mechanics workshops.

The Gods seem to approve of our hard work and have expressed this through their slaying of a Fire Imp right outside the fortress entrance.  Even after questioning, not one of my dwarves claimed the kill, so that leaves only the Gods themselves!

25th Granite

The Gods have gifted us again, with the accidental discovery of a vein of native copper!

18th Slate

This is really starting to take the piss now.  One of our dogs took it upon itself to charge a FIre Imp, resulting in it's instant, crispy death.
Do we treat our animals so badly they prefer to die?

2nd Felsite

After quite a few complaints about the size of the booze stockpile I ordered a farm area to be constructed.  This was finally finished this morning and we all drank a toast in celebration.  Building that Still brought out the first smiles I've seen this year.

5th Felsite

We've knocked up some magma forges to the west of our other workshops.  After much deep thought, I've decided not to try to channel magma at this point.  We need to be better trained before we can even consider disturbing the fiery creatures within.
To this end, my current priority is to get EVERY dwarf here at least slightly familiar with a crossbow.  Jakkarra's already knocked me up seven wooden ones, so I'm going to begin work on an archery range right away.

9th Felsite

Do these damn animals never learn?  This time a damn CAT tried attacking a fire imp!

15th Felsite

Archery Range almost completed.
SanDiego was instructed to construct a Dining Room and has surpassed my expectations in this task, even talking userpay into mining out a food storeroom across the stairway.
He was so proud of the fact that he'd remembered to build an eighth set of chair and table for when the dwarven liason turns up.  I think he might be having some sort of cave-in shock.  Although we haven't had any cave-ins...

Nice. No deaths. Mine was slightly different, with people horribly dying instead of animals. I had to lock the door to the outside in order to survive. Luckily, our two females are still alive...

Also, you're not likely to get a caravan until next year, if the humans come. It seems that without the Dwarven caravan, there won't be many Orcs. Unless I'm mistaken...

My turn's done now, over to SanDiego.

*****

12th Hematite

Archery range completed, the space designated to be mined out next to it will store bolts.
In the meantime, every dwarf wishing to live in this fortress is instructed to practice their archery.

19th Hematite

How foolish can I possibly be?
I left the axes on a stockpile while everyone was practicing archery and something's been in and pinched the both of them.
I'm going to have to do the magma now...

16th Malachite

The magma has been channeled beneath the workshops, against my better judgements.
I'm almost certain no good will come of this.

1st Galena

The axes have been replaced, but only with copper versions.  They'll be good enough to fell a few trees, but  we'll need better if the orcs find us.
I've also begun mining out an area for each dwarf to have their own room.  Of course mine is a little bigger than the rest, but who does all the hard work anyway?

10th Galena

The bedrooms have been pretty much finished for the time being, we're just waiting for one more door.  We'll get them smoothed down when time allows.

We need to claim some land above ground where we can safely cut trees and farm.  I'm drawing up the plans for this right now.

26th Limestone

It took longer than expected, but we now have a patch of land above ground which is completely under our control.  It may be small for now, but I'm sure that we can expand it over time.

The moat is accessible from below and separated from the main fort by some normally locked doors.  This means that any item which may fall in the moat can be taken back.

2nd Sandstone

Our basic needs now provided for, we must look for expansion.  I am not happy with the speed of our mining operations, so I'm drafting our butcher MarineElite as a part time miner as soon as we get this pick forged.

13th Sandstone

I've decided my two apprentices need to be shown what real dwarfyness is.  I'm taking them to the Bottom.

2nd Timber

We've reached the Bottom.  Alone in the very bowels of the earth, that's where you find out how much of a dwarf you really are.  At this holy place which is the closest to heaven, there is no trace of the light which infects the higher levels.  No sound to distract you from the whispers and scratchings of the Small Gods.  This is what it truly means to be a miner.  To be the first to reach this place, to listen to the rock, and to return to tell the others of it's teachings.
I spend the night down here after sending the others back to the main fortress.  Idash speaks to me in my dreams and tells me to construct a temple in this holiest of all spaces.

15th Moonstone

I guess even a miner as experienced as I am can make the occasional fuck up.  I was halfway through mining out the temple when I channeled the wrong part of the floor and fell two stories i the resulting cave-in.  I managed to get away with only a couple of bruises and a shallow cut on my right thigh, although I did regain consciousness to see Webadict smirking at me...

1st Obsidian

We've just finished the last balcony in the temple, but it's still unfurnished.  I'd draw a picture, but we all know it's bad luck to draw consecrated ground.
I've not healed from my injury yet, and keep feeling faint.  I'm starting to doubt I'll be able to lead properly in this state.

4th Obsidian

I've ordered part of the entrance widened for the construction of a trade depot.  I was having one of my faint spells at the time and overlooked the fact that this would give invaders an easy way in.  We'll have to build an extra wall to secure it again.

17th Obsidian

I've made a second exit, it could be useful if the orcs stumble across us.

20th Obsidian

I know it could be considered defeatist and undwarfly, but if the worst happens I want to be laid to rest properly.  That's why I've started mining out tombs for myself and each of my comrades.

23rd Obsidian

I spent today carving a name I came up with for our fortress in 12 foot high letters above the drawbridge.  "Inkypaddled" I call it.
I got some weird looks today.

24th Obsidian

The tombs are finished.  They just need doors to the now.
The other dwarves grumbled when they saw the size of mine, but who's running this place anyway?

25th Obsidian

They think I don't hear them talking about me.  "Undwarfly", "Selfish", "Insane"!
They say that my injury has driven me mad!

26th Obsidian

I awoke suddenly to a faint scratching sound.  The treacherous bastards had put a wolf in my room!
I grabbed my pick and dove straight for the beast, swinging at it's face.
I glanced quickly to the door as it slammed open and all the other dwarves piled in.  The wolf had somehow escaped and there was a big dent in the floor.
Their trying to make even me think I've lost it.

27th Obsidian

I walked into the dining room for a quick meal.
The room was full, although everyone left quickly.
I must have caught them plotting against me.

28th Obsidian

I stayed in the temple today, holding my pick close to me.
I hear Idash again.  He tells me that there is no plot.  That I need to pull myself together before it's too late.
They've even convinced the Gods now...

1st Granite

The plotters confronted me today, SanDiego, quite surprisingly in front.
They said I'd lost it completely.  Fighting with invisible creatures and talking to the wall.
Fools.  I have no desire to lead dwarves as stupid as these.
I'll wait for some immigrants to come from the Mountainhomes and make a new fortress with them instead!
I remembered then, and collapsed weeping on the ground I mined out myself.

*****

Well I think I've managed to lay out a pretty decent foundation in my year, although I'm disappointed I didn't get any siege/ambush...
Still, I've accomplished nearly everything I planned to except for marksdwarf training (due to all the axes being nicked) oh, and I just realised I forgot to build a well.
Anyway, looking forward to seeing what you guys have in store for it :)

Request to the next player:  Do whatever the hell you want to the fortress/landscape/whatever.  Just PLEASE roleplay a reaction to my last few entries.  I'd like to see how the takeover is handled.

Got the save, updating starts now.
*****
Journal of SanDiego, year 1 a.b. (after bloodshed)
Most of this diary is filled with sketches of different mechanisms, some violently scrubbed out, some encircled. However, in late autumn you can see some more interesting entries.

2nd Timber

lordcooper, our only miner has been acting stange lately. First, as he was carving our lodgings into the stone, he made each of us modest, but safe room. But to himself, he made almost a roayal apartment! When we asked him why did he do that, he replied he is 'the only one who does some work around here'. I didn't fully agree, but heck, he's a miner and we need miner. And today, he forged some spare picks, to teach some of us how to mine properly. With this, I wholeheartedly agree. He's taken them somewhere deep into the mountain, gods now what will they be doing there.

15th moonstone

I didn't much care about what lordcooper is doing down there until I heard the rumbling. I feared that lordcoopers apperentices came to injuries, but it was only himself accidentaly triggering a cave-in and falling down. His leg is hurt and he appears to have had a blow to head. We hope it won't afflict him in some manner.

1st obsidian

Apparently, lordcooper was making some kind of temple down there. He said gods told him to do so. I'm starting to question his sanity, but not when he's within earshot. Meanwhile, his injuries didn't heal and he keeps fainting and regaining consiousness periodically.

4th obsidian

Today, lordcooper told us to widen teh corridor and build a trade depot. Trade depot. I really don't know, who will be arriving here, since we are all that's lef from dwarvenkind and no one else nows, we're holed up here. But, he insisted.

20th obsidian

This is weird. More than usually, as lordcooper said, we need tombs to rest properly. Each of us. I think the injury has gotten the better of him.

23rd obsidian

Today, lordcooper carved a large grafitto over entry to our humble fortress. It read 'Inkypaddled'. Beaming with pride he said that this is the name of our fortress. I guess the blow in his head must have been larger than we presumed.

26th obsidian

Today, we heard scream from lordcooper's room followed by loud bang. When we entered his room (stormed is better term), he was pointing on a large dent in floor, saying a wolf attacked him in his sleep. He must be utterly mad.

27th obsidian

I assembled a quick meeting in dining room as lordcooper sleeps. I sketched the situation as it is and expressed my doubts in him as our leader. Others agreed and we voted for next leader. Much to my surprise they voted me. We agreed to replace lordcooper by the start of spring if he doesn't get better.

1st granite

Over the past few days, lordcooper was staying in his temple. He didn't care about the fortress as whole, so we confronted him today. We expressed our mistrust in his leadership abilities and I stood up to replace him. He seemed somewhat puzzled, but I hope, he'll get better in some time.
********
I'll be posting more updates as soon as I will have time to do so.

1st granite, year 2 a.b.

Today it's my first day as a leader of what is left ouf our race. I stopped smoothing walls, as there is much more important work to do. I'm putting some of my plans into motion.

13th Granite

Elven caravan arrived. What the hell? How could they know we're here?

Well, we can try and see what they brought.
Well, they had something. But nothing worth our nice crafts. And since they didn't like our wooden bins, we got free barrel of booze and some cages. We will need them for what I plan.

26th Granite

I have set my plan in motion. I lined our main entryway with cage traps hoping to catch something that could propell my automated spike traps.

8th Slate

Construction of automatic spikes started. We have the spikes. Now we need the automaton.

Also, I noted that Jakkara is just kicking around doing nothing. I will make sure to find some work for him.

12th Slate

We have struck alunite. Joy. I need goddamned bauxite for what I plan!

18th Slate

I extended our defences by planning battlements overlooking our now magma-filled moat. Also made Jakkara to make us some training bolts. From now on, anyone who won't have any job to do will shoot at training range.

16th Felsite

lordcooper wasn't working much lately. Athough he calls himself 'chief miner' I found out he wasn't mining for three months! I told him to get his ass in gear as there's much digging to be done.

1st Hematite

Today I designed way to seal fortress in case of emergency. The microline lever near main staircase on Trading level will bring up a wall of floodgates blocking trader's entryway. Also, earlier this morning we found purple spinel down in the eart. Excavating area for automaton begun. Now waiting for automaton.
