While playing Minecraft, my laptop sometimes decides to slow down horribly and won't recover until I reboot.

Oooo! I may be able to help with that! First you should know that pressing F3 will show your FPS at the top, your minecraft coords and a cyclic graph of frame latency at the bottom. Sometimes when I start Minecraft it slows down, at first, to 0-1 fps, chews all the cpu time it can get but won't ever be responsive. I fix that by (assuming you are not playing full screen) maximizing and/or minimizing the window. That one simple action is all it takes to get it over its hump. I may have to do it twice every now and again but Minecraft tends to get more stable after 5-10 minutes. I don't know if this will fix your problem but I've been wanting to say that to somebody for half a year now and it sounds close enough.

Just put the Modloader and Millienare mod on. Minecraft threw a fit and whitescreened.

First I wanted to start by saying that the Internet is kind of littered with posts of people who had trouble installing mods and then figuring it out. Installing mods is mildly tricky and so you probably want to try an easy one like modLoader, install it, prove it works, backup the minecraft.jar and only then move on to installing other mods.

Minecraft has made it dead easy to get out of a tricky situation by putting an options button on the launcher above the "Login" button. Click "Force update!" and it will refresh the install and leave you with a vanilla install of Minecraft 1.4_01. Now would be a good time to backup the minecraft.jar so that if anything goes wrong again while you're installing a mod you can get back to a state you've proved to be stable.

The two most frequent issues people have seems to be installing the wrong version of a mod and not deleting the META-INF folder. The current version is beta 1.4_01. I would made a "mods" folder in the ".minecraft" folder and then make a "beta 1.4_01" folder. Download a fresh version of ModLoader 1.4_01 into that folder and follow the instructions. If Minecraft crashes then you should really take a moment to take another look in the minecraft.jar file to make sure that you suceeded in removing META-INF from the file.

Edit: I meant to add a way to prove ModLoader is working and help you if there is a crash with another mod: ".minecraft/ModLoader.txt."

Wow! I just found a way to make playing with mods much easier!

Minecraft will work just fine without all the stuff in minecraft.jar bundled into a jar file. You can get rid of minecraft.jar and replace it with a folder of its contents that is named "minecraft.jar" and Minecraft will work with just the folder there!

I bought MineCraft yesterday, and had fun for a few hours, digging, killing mobs and the like, until I realized that MineCraft has mods.

I downloaded and installed this mod, followed the instructions and everything, but it refused to work.
I sighed, and resigned to playing vanilla. I deleted my .minecraft folder, and minecraft.exe, redownloaded, and tried to start it up.
I logged in, and almost immediately, I get a blank screen. Then my computer gets slow as fuck, and nothing works right anymore. I check the Performance in Windows Task Manager, and my memory usage is nearly twice of what it should be. I immediately end the javaw.exe process (the one that minecraft uses), and think that everything will be fine.
Of course, I'm wrong.
Memory usage was still sky high, and going ever higher, and firefox was crashing due to lack of memory, and soon, windows fucked up, and I had to flip the switch, shutting off my internet, my computer, and my printer (which was making weird noises throughout this whole thing).
Upon reboot, memory usage skyrockets up to where it was before I shut down, and the thing that is using the most memory turns out to be explorer.exe.
I know from experience that you don't end that process, and I don't know what to do.
I'm only managing to use firefox at the moment because I'm running in safe mode.

I know I should ask the MineCraft forums or something, but I really don't want to take part in that community.

Any help?

You can generally pretty safely end explorer.exe It's just that you can't do much with windows without it running, so if you want to do anything else, you'll have to start it back up again. (Under file, in the process list window, you can bring up the "run" window. Type explorer into that and it'll start it back up. Doubt this will help, but just FYI.

Small update on my water power plant, still small but can power my miners well enough. I should be able to get enough iron to make several more levels of it before I need to use HV lines.
at the center of the crosses there are MFEs of course.


by the way, does anyone know a free ID#? I'd like to install plane mod too, but I am not sure where I can move my solar generator ID.

So the water mill blocks generate power from water flowing nearby, not just water source blocks?

yes, they can use running water too. which leaves some holes in the 3x3x3 shell, but makes engineering muuuch easier. whenever I want, I can close the source, dry the chamber, do whatever work I need, and then open it again.

reading poca's experiments, I think I am going to double the space between the rows. sure, I get to build less. but considering that it probably generates more energy than I will ever need anyway, and that I have an iron shortage... I think it is better to go for iron efficency rather than space efficency.

Mind giving me a diagram of what you come up with?

Sounds more like the work of a virus.

Run a pandascan while in safe mode if you don't have an anti-virus.

It's not a virus, I've run spybot and malware bytes in safe mode, and they got nothing.
Also, my computer has appeared to have fixed heritself, through running in safe mode all day, and turning it off and on again a few times.
I haven't tested to see if MineCraft will work or not, and I'm kind of reluctant to because it might happen all over again.

Minecraft can do absolutely nothing to explorer.exe.  Nothing.  Whatever you have going on here is not the work of Minecraft.

Spybot won't find a virus, because it searches for, guess what, spyware.
Malwarebytes, I haven't used personally, but I would recommend a dedicated virus scanner anyway, because stuff often slips through singular defenses of any sort.

Microsoft Security Essentials is actually pretty good, and not too bad on system resources (unless you try to launch one of those retarded game installers that include the entire 4-5GB of game data in the exe, but I think just about any proper virus scanner would get hung up on such a thing too).
