I imagine the rabble when he makes torches non-permanent in one of his secret friday updates.

It will take some getting used to though, hopefully he adds in some other type of lightsource. Maybe involving redstone

I imagine the rabble when he makes torches non-permanent in one of his secret friday updates.
When? The rabble has already begun. And hundreds of people have already posted in the thread saying replacing their already-existing torches would be too much to deal with, or having to replace their lights all the time, after somebody saying on the first page that already-existing torches will be replaced with lanterns that won't go out.

And goddammit that's my section that will bitch about it fuuuuuuuuu-

Eh... Replacing all the torches in my project area will be annoying, there's alot of them...

On the other hand, lanterns will look absolutely stunning in my chandeliers.

I remember somebody saying Notch said it during a Twitter update or something. I can't really verify it, but it is brought up in the various threads that cropped up for this.

Alright, nobody is allowed to complain at all! No matter what! We can't afford Duke going on a rampage!

If Notch was smart, he'd make torches temporary in an update that breaks save files anyways - no 'replacement' necessary, since your world is toast regardless.  :P

That said, is there really any point in making torches temporary? It's yet another factor that would make the early game a real pain, while the late game (when you presumably have access to the resources to make permanent light sources) would be largely unaffected. And, I mean, this is a world where a pick made of wood can dig through solid stone - realism < gameplay, and I see no reason to change that just because ever-burning torches are somewhat unrealistic. Hindering gameplay for realism is bad.

I agree- lanterns would be nice. How about this- maybe they could be much brighter than torches, but need to be refuled (possibly with a variety of fuels), while torches continue to last forever?

Eh... Nooo... I'm putting these things in my chandeliers. O(

However, if you could use redstone to fuel them magically...
