I just happened again, after about half an hour of playtime, in almost the same part of the map (the bottom), after stuttering and shaking for a few minutes.  I don't normally worry about stuttering in Minecraft, because it does the same thing at day/night shifts.  But what I can't figure out is why it's doing it today, when it's never happened before.

Maybe I shouldn't have Tindeck tabbed open in the background.

Sounds like shaky openGL drivers. Updated recently?

OpenGL drivers, no.  But, again, I don't see why it would be catastrophically and almost consistently crashing now, when it never has before.  It's not like the existence of newer drivers causes the old ones to spontaneously bork out.

I just tried updating the actual videocard drivers, but apparently I have the newest manufacturer version anyway.

Sometimes they screw up in newer drivers. ATI has had that happen a few times, particularly with OpenGL (which is part of the actual videocard drivers). So if you had recently updated and stuff suddenly started crashing that could be the cause, but apparently you haven't and it isn't.

Well, that fucked over my computer, so I had to roll-back to the previous drivers.  I can't help but think everything is displaying slightly different, but maybe it's just my imagination.  Of course, having my resolution hard reset to 640x320 rearranged the 175 icons on my desktop.  I suppose I should organize all this crap.

Point is, I guess I'll just have to be careful playing Minecraft, since this little escapade accomplished even less than nothing.

Hmm... he says that he's "adding crouching to make up for the late release." Think that means there's something else being added as well? (I guess it wouldn't be 'seecret' if he told us beforehand...)

As to the lag: Never had a BSoD, but Minecraft screws over my network, preventing any kind of internet access, and forcing me to either restart the computer, or restart the router (either works). Installing the latest drivers helped, but only marginally - I can play for several hours without issue (instead of ~5 minutes pre-update), but sooner or later it's going to time out.  >:(

Hope Notch gets around to patching up his network code a bit - fix that duplication exploit, cut down on visible client lag, and maybe solve a few of these outstanding issues while he's at it.  :D

Constantly moving this Jaycraft post is now obsolete, as I have it moved off-forum.

He mentioned today's tomorrow's changes (besides crouching) in an earlier post:

I’ve fixed furnaces in SMP and added volume and mouse sensitivity sliders in the options.

Finally, I hope this means I can increase Minecrafts low, low volume settings rather than amp my headset volume to max and lower my XMplay volume to 4.

Rock, Paper, Shotgun has been doing an article series this week too, which has convinced a lot of readers to shell out for the game. Including me. Suffering from sleep deprivation now.

Well at least Penny Arcade's userbase can't be nearly as bad as minecraft's... can it?
