Plenty of times. It's really a toss-up between whether it's worth trying to get a wish early and risk being killed by water demons or snakes (or having everything stolen by a nymph or whatever) or not going for a wish and waiting until you fountains are comparatively safer (but then again, you may well be dead by that point).

Yes I have gotten a wish out of one. One time out of the very, very few times I have ever gotten a water demon, and that was when I was just starting nethack and still thought a very small chance for a wish was well worth the gigantic risk (in truth, it really isn't). Even with my excessive dipping as a knight (for Excalibur), so far I have never, or extremely rarely gotten a water demon, let alone a wish.

Type #enhance. If you don't have a skill point to spend, the list is read-only. Skills that you can improve on will have a checkbox (for Windows version).

Water demons aren't dangerous,it's the things that they summon for help that are.

They only summon when they hit in melee and since I was always on an Elbereth square, I just bounced magic missiles (or did I force bolt it?) and thwacked in in melee when it closed. I spent the rest of the time spamming Elbereth. It was a big room with both doors closed so it couldn't escape. I was just as surprised to see it die as I was to see my E-spam was working.

I'm currently playing as a elf wizard, found a aligned altar and I got freaking Magicbane by sacrificing a newt. What.

Ooh, gloves of dexterity (at least, I'm pretty sure they are). Too bad they're +0, thus they don't give me any bonuses.

Found a lamp, haven't gotten around to checking it yet, I'll check it in minetown.

I found tins of... Cooked dwarves in minetown. WHAT THE F-

The lamp I found isn't a magic lamp. HOWEVER, I reached Minetown and Izchak DOES have one, AWESOME!

The Temple in Minetown is neutral, darn.

Oh yes, a +2 rustproof magicbane. Oh wow, this is going to be fun. I also found a opal out of my junk glass gems. Oh look, a goddamn blessed scroll of amnesia, why the hell is it blessed?! Also: Cursed potion of gain ability. If I had more holy water I would bless it, but I don't have much (2). And dammit, my wand that I found was a wand of sleep. That sucks. Oh and a nymph. Muhahaha, you can run but you can't teleport! Oh, thank you for the water.

I did the second level quite poorly. Ended up having to destroy 3 boulders for varying reasons. This is going to hurt my luck quite badly.

Oh hey, a black light. F-... Good thing the only remaining creatures around are an elf, something (that I killed accidentally in one hit), and something else, which is immobile (Turned out to be an Iron piercer).

Read Skills. Each time you gain a level you gain a skill slot, yes. But you can only advance in a skill if you unlock those slots. To unlock them you have to use the skill X amount of times (see the Skills page for the exact amounts).

Found a ring and a wand that doesn't do anything when engraved. As a reminder to people that can't bother to bring up the wand page, there are six wands that do that, locking, opening, probing, undead turning, nothing and secret door detection.

I... I got the one with the amulet of reflection, as you know I need storage, so the amulet is the exact opposite of what I wanted.

Oh hey, another wand that does nothing when engraved.

Ooh, a lizard corpse, that could come in handy.

I'm now an expert in daggers, oooh yeaaah. I hope my enemies are ready to get a face-full of Magic Bane and force bolt.

While dipping I got a water demon, though it was a hostile one, he died quite easily.

OH MY GOD FROSTBRAND GIFT AWESOME... Oh frick, that's actually bad. I can't dual wield them, and I need magicbane for it's great powers. So the gift was really, really bad, since now I have an even longer prayer timeout.

Urgh, oh well...

Hm, doesn't seem to matter all that much. A few sacrifices and my god's happy again. Anyway, I identified some of my items and found a scroll of taming, a scroll of enchant armor, and a wand of turn undead.

Going back to the mines, I think it's time to finish them.

Just noticed I had three rings of searching... So I removed one ring of searching from my hand and dropped two of them, then I put on my uncursed ring of shock resistance.
