If I found a magic lamp in mine town, I bless it and hold on to it as an ever-lasting light source and emergency wish (e.g. blessed genocide).

I don't wish for items early (unless it's a water demon wish) - because I'm very likely to find many parts of the ascension kit myself, and I don't need any of them to increase my chance of survival.

May I ask what you usually wish for?
Grayswandir or a blessed +12 (or some other number) Shimmering Dragon scale mail or a lightsaber.

I see you play Slash'EM. I can't seem to get beyond the first 2-3 levels.

Should I stop trying to win without spoilers?

To exist or not exist, that is the query. For whether it is more optimal of the CPU to endure the viruses and spam of outragous fortune, or to something something something.

Yes, you should. Back when I was seriously playing, whenever I had the game open, I had the wiki open.

Don't think of the wiki as cheating, think of it as the player's manual that came with the game.

I never reached sokoban.
That's because you do the mines first! It's a devious trap by the DevTeam - the entrance appearing sooner doesn't mean you have to go there first!
But it's so tempting!

Besides, the gnomes are some of the weakest enemies in the game (in my opinion). The only actual threats to me are the (somewhat rare) traps and the newly spawned enemies that you can find anywhere else in the dungeon. And if I didn't go to the mines I would have never got the bones file, the BoH and a spellbook of identify,

Unknown to most but the insane and the mystics, Tarran is actually Earth itself, as Earth is sentient like that planet in Avatar. Originally Earth used names such as Terra on the internet, but to protect it's identity it changed letters, now becoming the Tarran you know today.

Tarran has the "Tarran Bug", a bug which causes the affected character to repeatedly hit teammates while dual-wielding instead of whatever the hell he is shooting at.

In my experience, the worst part of the mines are those trapdoors.  They can easily get you lost for just long enough to die.  The thing is, Minetown is so valuable (bait?) that I almost never pass up the opportunity to go there.

Technically speaking, one can learn via the in-game clues - blessed fortune cookies and paying The Oracle. Many important clues can be obtained that way. And then you can experiment (and likely die, then start anew with more knowledge).

But practically I don't think anyone is patient enough to do that...

Do note those clues contain perhaps hundreds of fluff messages that don't help you in any way. Fuck that and any game that requires a guide to make it halfway through I'm playing Powder.

Although aside from that and the rather boring level generator I don't have many complaints about Nethack. Many systems are very nice to encounter and the deaths are hilarious.

Buck up friendo, we're all on the level here.
I would bet money Andrew has edited things retroactively, except I can't prove anything because it was edited retroactively.

Linley Henzell (original author of Crawl) says he won an early version of Nethack several times without spoilers.  He thinks it was version 1.4f.

Eric Wright says he beat version 3.0J twice without spoilers.

There's probably others, I didn't spend much time searching.

And, of course, there is the saga of Ellora the Elven archer.

I've read some non-spoiler stories before, but at some point of them I found their decisions influenced by either reading spoilers or advice from forums/newsgroups.

Well, this game's off to a fine start.  I rolled my character, took one step, and my dog was killed by a falling rock.
