The DF-Themed 4e Campaign I've been working on, The Isle of Earthfire, is coming along nicely. If the pace continues as it has, it should be ready to go in a few weeks. 6 Seats will be available in total, and I'm starting to take Player Applications for it now. Experienced players and newcomers are welcome, and I'd be happy to explain anything that you need to know to get started in 4e.

If you're interested in a seat, please submit the following info:
 - Availability: Days and times you're free to play (In GMT)
 - Character Info: Name, Race, Class, and Gender.
 - Charcter Concept: In one sentence, describe your character as an adventurer.
 - Heroic Background: In a sentence or two, describe the deed which allowed your character to become Level 1 in their class.

Example:
Talan Karr, Human Fighter (Male)
Concept: A former soldier now hiring out as a mercenary.
Background: Unarmed and separated from his squad while on the front lines, he singlehandedly defeated an entire enemy squad, and bested their commander, using only a stout oak branch.

Availability: I really have no time restraints at all, as I'm currently unemployed. i.e. I'm good any day, around the clock.
Character Info: Bastion Sing'Uvian, Dragonborn, Avenger, Male
Charcter Concept: Nothing is perfect, even the Earth spins on a tilted axis. Striving for justice in an imperfect world, Bastion adventures forth to turn the tide, even if it's just on a personal level.
Heroic Background: Third-son of a village merchant, Bastion was entered into the church of Bahamut as a stripling lad. Throughout his years in the seminary he witnessed firsthand the injustice of a corrupt priesthood. Shortly before his ordination as a paladin, he saw a young widow being cheated out of her last silver penny. His rage blazing fourth, Bastion struck down the priest in question for his Heresy against Bahamut! Thus did Bastion step down the path of Avenger, with the rage of the just and the blood of the vile.

Also, Mages, I found a VERY nice thing to use for us.

Prepare all of your spell slots with Energy Substituted (electricity or sonic), Born of Three Thunders, Flash Frost Locate City spells. Save all of your 4th-level slots for Lesser Globe of Invulnerability. Cast LGoI so you'll be immune to the havoc you'll be causing. Now grab some ice from the freezer and cast Locate City. Because of Snowcasting, it gets the [cold] subtype, but because of Energy substitution, it instead has either the [electricity] or [sonic] subtype. Flash Frost makes it deal 2 cold damage to everyone in the area, which then gets converted to 2 electricity or sonic damage. Born of Three Thunders makes that 1 electricity and 1 sonic, and forces a Fortitude save against being stunned and forces a Reflex save against being knocked prone. Explosive Spell only affects spells that force a Reflex save, so we've got that covered.

Locate City affects a 10-mile/level radius, centered on you. At caster level 7th, that's a 70-mile radius, or a 369,600-foot radius. So you'll be doing 1 electricity damage and 1 sonic damage. Anyone who fails both the Fortitude save and the Reflex save will be pushed to the nearest edge of the area, taking 1d6 damage for every 10 feet moved. That's going to be a very forceful and painful trip indeed.

Once you cast it, all structures in a 70-mile radius will get utterly destroyed, and approximately half the population will fail their saves and violently get killed.

Mini-Campaign Thoughts and Update
« Reply #129 on: March 29, 2009, 08:17:26 pm »

Impressions from the session on Friday:  For me, it was enjoyable, if stressful at times.  People seemed to be making an honest effort to act in character throughout most of the session.  Turns were slow, but no slower than I expected for players new to the system, their characters, and/or tabletop role playing in general.

Speeding combat up is an important goal.  It'll probably get faster as people simply gain more familiarity with the game.  Dice rolling macros are also likely to speed things up noticeably.  The speed gained by showing the monster's HP and defenses is probably worth losing the mystery of having them hidden.  Finally, while long descriptions can be exciting, it's probably best to find a compromise between evocative descriptions and shorter typing times.  I would identify familiarity with the game as the biggest influence though.

Next session:  I'm scheduling it for 20:00 GMT on Friday, April 3rd.  If four or more players can confirm they'll show up for the session, I'll run it.  I need to know if you can make it by 20:00 GMT on Thursday, April 2nd.  We'll continue from where we left off.

By the way, in response to doubts as to what is possible in Map Tool, I went to look up tools on the forum, and found something that caught me completely off-guard:

The 4e Interactive Character Sheet

Someone has created an Interactive Character Sheet which runs within Map Tool. You can browse and edit character sheets, look up inventory items, add powers (standard or custom), roll skill checks, and so on.

One of the coolest parts is that it all of the commands and menus can be reached from the character sheet through clicking on hyperlinks. You can look up the effects of any debilitating conditions on your character by clicking them, do a Strength Check by clicking on the word Strength, or use a Daily Power by clicking on it (this also sets a flag that will alert all players that it was already used before taking an appropriate rest). You can edit your own character sheet, or help someone else editing theirs (GMs are notified of all changes). When you use powers and it outputs text to the chat window, you can also click on the message and get a link to the power, for easy reference.
