The HFS was easy to find. My first probe hit it. I mean, look at the features of the map and think about how you pick embark regions - why you make it the size and shape you do. The magma pool is simple to find, so that leaves the HFS. There's only a handful of places it could be.

Good point, I got it.

After much save scumming and a couple full retries, my setup is coming along nicely. I hope to have a submission in the next few days.

I got rather frustrated when I finally managed to get a caravan and the wagons while I was in the possession of lots of trade goods; the bastards brought 1 highly decorated pick (~1500 dwarfbucks) and only steel anvils (3000 each). Argh!

Hi. I decided to join just for HFunS.

It nicely passed 20M dwarfbucks. Is not biscuit food industry overpriced and sort of an exploit? Well, that is also controversial... so I put it all into another field of wealth. Yay for dwarven greed.

I wish to correct my earlier guess.

I have no chance. Even if I do discover the HFS.

Daaaaamn. 20M?

Again, I want to know when immigrants hit, because I've not seen any.

On my first run through (not too successful, but...) I got 4 immigrants in the first fall, shortly after the dwarven caravan showed up. Not a lot, but every bit helps.

Wow what a score!

I'm tempted to try again now ;)

And about prepared meals, my first attempt I went for dwarven syrup roasts etc..

The problem is that cooks take more than 2 years to train, even by making simple meals. Though once you have a legendary one you get roasts in the 40,000 range.

Well ... I guess we have another leader.

Also biscuit industry is not a exploit. I would say it is unbalanced. Simply it is legal to cook.

I concede.

Why? Everybody still has a good chance. And I will hand out some special prices.

Broke 13M, though I think I could've done quite a bit better. I haven't messed with HFS since the 2d version, and I was caught off guard by the huge amount of everyone's favorite metal. I ended up not getting to use 130 some chunks of it, even though I changed my strategy to "use as much as possible" in the last fall.

I did pick up a number of the "achievements" however:
Greens
All survivors - no dwarf may die
Artist - build non-abstract mural at at least 8x8 squares (8x11 dwarf icon)
Designer - build at least one grand room (Trivial with adamantine)
Yellows
Newton was wrong - build and use atomic smasher (standard in all of my forts)
Great Designer - build at least one royal room
Wrath - have at least 50 deceased entities in units list (one hunter, two seasons, done)
Jack of all trades - build 4 weapon racks (one of wood, one of flux, one of glass and one of metal)
Reds
Ruler of whole race - lure the king (or queen) (Adamantine king takes no effort)

I had fun with this, thanks for putting it together DennyTom!

Great job! I will ask you for prices of your artifacts so I can update leaderboard and correct you a little.

You can not get Newton was wrong just for atomic smasher - you need also infintite water source, perpetuum mobile and some structure that would definitely fall in real world.

Also it seems you all are missing one important thing - to succesfuly finish contest, you must send me your save, so I can check everything is ok. Screens of status screen are great and I trust you were playing by rules, but by sending me a save, we can be sure everything is fair. You do not have to post it on forums (if you fear others will use it for their own good), but at least send it to me by email or PM me a link.

Odd thing about immigration: my first run, a test, ended with some 45 dwarfs... i wonder why that is. Maybe because they were more employed as real workers and not so much as haulers... an unemployment issue? ;)

Well, my exploratory attempt struck adamantine, right where I expected it. I also struck the HFS. It's of the worse kind.

and what are all of those elves doing there?
