I give him all my money. I've gotten the first shortcut, but rarely make it past the jungle to give him all my money again. Going through the cave makes you slightly more prepared for the jungle but all the more depressing when you get spiked/spiked/eaten/etc.

The way you phrase this makes it sound like you can pay for the shortcut a bit at a time rather than all at once. I'm torn between begging you to say this is the case, and darkly glowering that it'd better not be, what with all the gold I've lost on levels 5 and 6.

Yeah, You don't HAVE To pay off that 100,000$ all at once, when he asks you for money, hold the up-arrow key, and the amount of money that you want to give him will increase.

Okay, death count has now crawled its way up to 40.  In commemoration of this great event, I got to see level four.


Two things plague me, however.  One, I have no idea how to legally buy things from a store.  The first three times I tried I ended up throwing climbing gloves in the face of the shopkeeper, causing him to return the favor with some hot lead.  Great fun losing an RNG-blessed beginning to human stupidity.

The other thing is the ghost.  I do not, have not, and will not like time limits like that.  I loathe that kind of "run to the (unseen) exit now or die" feature, it just kills my experience.  I like taking my time and making the most of each area.


The game seems split between being a roguelike and being a platformer...  I'd much rather play a roguelike.

To use the store properly, press P when you are carrying the item you wish to buy. If you decide you don't want it press down and attack to drop it.

You'll just need to hurry up for the ghost, learn to attack the levels quickly and aggressively.

It's not like there is ever enough to do on any given level to warrant staying too long. Then again, I never cleared the first world yet (and my death count's over a hundred - I'm clearly not too good at platformers. But I beat Cave Story. Not to mention countless platformers on the NES. I even beat the US version of Contra Hard Corps.).

Yes. I get splattered by the mean brass ball. :P

I dare say CHC is more interesting, even if lacking in the storyline aspect. It still has bucketloads of difficulty to dump on you.

It's supposed to be a combination of a platformer, and a roguelike.

Wow, amazing the things you see when you turn resolution down to 3x so the bottom 10% or so of the screen is visible...  ::)

I've died over 600 times and haven't beaten this yet. But it's too fun to stop playing.

I've died on the first and last areas more times than the two between them. Why? Arrow traps, so hard to overlook them.
