Second all of these guys. Once you have even 1 point in spellcasting you should pick up a level one spell, as almost all of them are useful. And even if they aren't, they open up training in those skills. Unless they changed that, I haven't been keeping track. But, you want conjurations? Pick up shock from that book and turn it on. Aside from the fact that its a nifty little 1 MP aoe attack and at 10 spellcasting you could use it regardless of apts and skill levels otherwise, it opens up conjuration training now for you. Plus, you can pick up swiftness.

Ustxu Iceraped the Frigid Crystal of Slaughter was a glacier titan. It was the only one of its kind. A gigantic feathered carp composed of crystal glass. It has five mouths full of treacherous teeth, enormous clear wings, and ferocious blue eyes. Beware its icy breath! Ustxu was associated with oceans, glaciers, boats, and murder.

How you doing, thread, hope at least someone is having fun playing Crawl, because I most certainly am not.

12 runes on my current GrEE, and what was the most fun I've had in a 3-rune game turned into the worst post-endgame run I have ever experienced.

Tons upon tons of pan levels without an exit, a holy pan level [first time running into one of these - felt the bizarre need to clear it fully and let me tell you it is proper bollocks], had to flee from Cerebov's level without so much as smacking him on the gob as I ran out of food [!?!?] clearing the endlessly respawning hordes of balrugs - only way out was through the abyss, where I quaffed absolutely all of my potions as I was constantly starving, surviving on the precious few pears and apples scattered across the abyss [Thanks, Fedhas!]. If I hadn't hybridized I would've starved, as I could at least beat demons over the head with my cane in the Abyss, instead of just quitely starving away.

I finally escaped the abyss, and went into the hells, going for Cocytus first. It took me more than 10 tries to kill Antaeus, then it took me about seven standard aeons to even get to Ereshkigal and Dispater, but I killed them both within two or so attempts.

I guess my build was really not optimal for post-endgame, and I'm not even a good player, so I kind of need overpowered builds to carry me. I  started my build by only training Spellcasting, Earth and Conjurations until Shatter, then transitioned into a melee/earth hybrid with staff of earth. This was by far the most fun I've had pre-endgame, but Shatter is horrible for post-endgame AOE [tons of flying stuff] and Earth doesn't have anything else, and I stubbornly refused to branch out because I felt I should be strong enough.

Well I am not. The endlessly respawning waves in the hells are whittling me down and as I'm following Vehumet very often I can't regenerate enough health to continue, and have to go back to the vestibule and rest. I have incredible single-target damage, controlled blink, haste and statue form, but absolutely no way to clear large groups of flying enemies. I just finished all my saved permafood [72 pieces, 32 bread and the rest meat and beef jerky] and had to go to a store and get more.

I went into Gehenna and got abyssed somehow, barely surviving the endlessly respawning enemies in the Abyss, and just now realising that god damn I have not learned Regeneration I am out of my god damn brain, so I escaped from the abyss, left Gehenna, got regeneration and called it for today.

Tomorrow I'll see if I want to push for 15 runes, or just win, because this is seriously tedious and boring and really not much fun, and will post my dump to serve as a warning to others.

What a strange and beautiful world I beheld, but dangerous too, I was certain. And I was friendless and homeless. And so I prayed.

What strategy are you using for hells?  Just to let you know, the correct one is "in and out as quickly as possible".  There is basically no loot there and you do not need XP at this stage in the game.

No way! The hells are FUN.

And yeah shatter always felt kinda "meh" to me, it does good damage but:
A. It wrecks every cover around you
B. It makes so much noise even a snorlax would wake up
C. All the really dangerous foes (fiends) are resistant

ok, I need advice; right now, I just bashed a unique and picked up a freaking dire flail of distortion, which sounds pretty awesome! My deep dwarf fighter could use it(with a little cross-training help, since I'm currently doing axes), but is it really as good as it sounds? (note, I haven't managed to have a ident scroll on me to see what other bonuses it has, so for all I know it's a -9 -9 dire flail of distortion)

No. I suppose there are similarities, but I'm fairly certain angry birds doesn't let me charge into a battalion of knights with a car made of circular saws.

Distortion weapons are not good. Every time you unwield one a bunch of horrible shit will happen to you, including a 25% chance of banishment to the Abyss...

MAYBE if it was a +9 executioner's axe or something like that it would be worth using, but a mediocre weapon that you have no skill in? I don't think so. Actually I take part of that back, even if it was a max enchanted executioner's axe it still probably wouldn't be worth it.

If you have no reason to unwield a distortion weapon (and have skills in the weapon type), they can be very good for casters as last resort (as casters will not go much in melee).

A few years ago , my only online winner character in a tourney (a demigod earth elementalist) had a good dagger of distortion saving his life multiple times by banishing threats he couldn't escape and that were surviving his spells, he has used it nearly for the whole game.

there's only been 1 major release since then, biggest change is prob the Vaults being completely redone

next release will have bigger additions, a few new races and a new branch that randomly replaces the Crypts

Distortion is good providing you're ok with never unwielding the weapon again.

Always keep some wands/ranged options on hand for constrictors and other close combat nasties, even if you are a fighter.

Zin is really great in trunk, by the way. You no longer have to stand still doing nothing while reciting, making it a lot less dangerous to use, and it seems to actually affect things more often as well.

Distortion is good providing you're ok with never unwielding the weapon again.

Or worshiping Lugonu, yeah.
