Yeah there's no need to worry about cursed blunt weapons anymore.

I get what you mean. Got down to lair with a DsFi, but was unaware of the existence of Hydras, and thus ill prepared. Trying not to look stuff up is !!FUN!!.
Tips for dealing with relatively early hydras:
1. Run away, they only have normal speed.  Annotate stairs if you used them to escape a hydra, you don't want to walk down the stairs into one.
2. Use your higher tier wands (Cold, Fire, Draining, Fireball, Lightning, maybe Disintegration) if you want them dead.

Unless you're really strong (ie a berserking troll) you don't want to fight one with a non-flaming slashing weapon, too.

It's generally up to date with the most recent stable version, or trunk if it says so.

If it doesn't mention, it's most likely current trunk; if the entry is about something that was changed in the last week, it's most likely not updated. If you're unsure, you can ask your question on the IRC (linked on the main page with "##crawl"), and you'll get a prompt response as long as england or most of america is awake-- this is generally better, because if the bots are wrong about your question someone will often update them right then and there.

Predit: I'm slow again.

Imagine a cool peice of sky-blue and milk-white marble about 3cm by 2cm and by 0.5cm, containing a tiny 2mm malacolite crystal. Now imagine the miles of metamorphic rock it's embedded in that no pick or chisel will ever touch. Then, imagine that those miles will melt back into their mantle long before any telescope even refracts an image of their planet. The watchers will be so excited to have that image too.

^ This is only one of the reasons to stash some of your consumables. I mean, you're not really gonna want to identify 15 things in a row, are you ?

It's even more rage-inducing if you happen to be carrying around all your Heal Wounds potions and get 4-6 of them shattered in one chilling encounter.

There should be a hoarding god that gains piety by being overencumbred and eventually let you stash stuff in a dimensional pocket or something. When you die, he get dibs on your stuff so it's win win for him.

I usually don't stash part of stacks ...

It comes from playing mostly Strength oriented or hybrids, and having more problems with the 52 slots limit than the weigh limit, and it's a bad habbit, but yeah ...

It's even more stupid when you know I encountered the dragon in Lair:3, when I stashed things in Lair:1 ... :/

Anyway, it's my best Gargoyle so far (Gargoyle Gladiator, going with Maces + shield, and Ashenzari. Still looking for good books to cast, but already got 10 in spellcasting...). And I'm slowly getting at a point where the game is unknown to me, as I don't have any character that made it into the Lair branches, of post-Lair/Orc Dungeon branches ...

Maybe I can even get a win !
(but I haven't got a run ever :D )

It would be called Pension Scheme.

So you're saying you got ten levels in a skill you're not using at all? You haven't grabbed apportation or repel missiles  or anything?

I can learn apportation, but am still looking for a book with good spells ...
I mean, I got books with spells I can't learn (too high level), a book of air (with my -2 in air and +2 in earth, I won't learn em), and the book of cantrips, so ... looking for low level earth or conjuration spells ... recently found the book of ice, and i'm thinking about learning "Ensorcelled Hibernation", so I can level Ice enough to get "Bolt of Ice" and level conjurations ;)
But, as I just spent most of my Lair XP getting level 10 in shields, I don't want to fall behind and get bashed by a pack of death yaks ... :/

After 10 levels of spellcasting, you take what you can get, then use amnesia scrolls if you find something better, specifically...

a book of air
This has swiftness and repel missiles, so unless you're wearing heavy armour, aptitudes be damned. With 10 spellcasting and decent int those spells should be under 20% fail, and a bit of charms skill will take that down another notch. On another character, Flight would also be useful, but you get that as a Gargoyle for some reason.

looking for low level earth or conjuration spells
This would be a good plan if you were with Sif and thus could expect to eventually get the spells you want.
... recently found the book of ice, and i'm thinking about learning "Ensorcelled Hibernation", so I can level Ice enough to get "Bolt of Ice" and level conjurations ;)
So you already dumped 10 -1apt levels into spellcasting without using them, and now you're planning on dumping another 10 levels into ice and conj each before you can use them? That sounds a lot more dangerous than--
But, as I just spent most of my Lair XP getting level 10 in shields, I don't want to fall behind and get bashed by a pack of death yaks ... :/
You'll have swiftness. Death yaks do not have ranged attacks. You can run away.

Edit: Oh right, and don't forget that useful time-saving apportation. Assign it to a macro so you can easily clear rooms of items without stepping in. (I use - or +, since those cycle items in targeting.)

so I can level Ice enough to get "Bolt of Ice" and level conjurations ;)

That'll be difficult, because that spell doesn't exist.
