They could make skill points get trained all at once into whatever is being practiced, but I prefer this system. I like learning brian surgery from shooting up scorpions, or whatever the rant was titled.

So, how exactly are the points distributed? Say I want to level up translocations, but all I have is blink. Do I just kill something and the points go into everything evenly, or do I have to actually use blink during combat. This was probably answered, but I can't make anything out of these posts.

It'll prioritize skills you have on when you kill something, but distribute points to others too. I got traps & doors from killing a zombie.

Though i'm not sure of the difference between "auto" and "manual", as in both i could turn off some skills and have only the ones turned on being trained.

My interpretation would say that 'auto' works a bit like the old way, in that skills you actively use get trained even if you turn them off (though I haven't played much to see if that is the case, and it appears to butt heads with your experience). Manual would be the 'new' method in that experience goes to skills you've activated regardless of what skills you actually use, e.g. training fighting even though you blast things with spells.

Edit: Ah, looks like Auto chooses the percent of experience that goes to the skills based on your level of usage. Manual will split experience as evenly as possible between all the skills you select to train.

Ok that was exciting. My second win (with another Paladin) and I managed to get more runes than the first time, even the one from Gehenna I think. In end game I got my shit wrecked by Khufu and some mummy priests. I had no idea how much damage they could dish out. I made the mistake of trying to run away from two mummy priests, I almost paid for it with my life. But at the last second I went berserk and took them out.

I'm pretty sure it only distributes points towards a first level, if you've practiced that school at some point.  Once you have a first level and you turn the skill off no points will go towards it.

I tried a "speed run" in 0.9.  54453 turns.  8:39:09 real time.

I was not prepared for the new Orb and Zot5.

Alternatively silver sling bullets (silver bolts?) are surprisingly effective.  Chaotics take double damage from silver and if you take off your shield you can fire fast.
Shields don't reduce firing speed for slings (unless they recently changed it!). Pressing "@" will let you find out your attack speed if you want to check.

Pretty sure non-buckler shields have a fixed speed decrease on all attacks. All shields including bucklers also randomly make your attacks slower. Note that I haven't been keeping up with trunk changes, so this may have changed recently.

Hmm...I've never been a big fan of CCGs - I mean, I did and still do collect Pokemon cards, but I never got heavily into the battling and trading thing.

By definition that makes you a fan since you still buy them.

I kind of enjoy the new training system. It takes a little bit to get used to, but it seems to work surprisingly well for most of the classes I've played around with. Is it just me, or are deep elf wizards (or any spellcaster specialty) getting a ton more experience sent into spellcasting with 'auto' clicked on? It makes sense, reading the supposed mechanics.. but wow. Conjurations/summoning are at 4 and 5, and spellcasting is already at 10. I didn't pay much attention to that before this trunk version so I'm not sure if that's normally how fast it levels.

1. Using a shield ... slows your attack speed (both melee and ranged (0.7)).
2. You need 5/15/25 skill to eliminate speed, damage, and casting penalties for bucklers/shields/large shields for normal races (including draconians, except they can't use bucklers), 7/21/- for kobolds and halflings, 9/-/- for spriggans, 3/9/15 for nagas and centaurs, -/9/15 for trolls and ogres.

1. Adjusted shield evasion penalty = base penalty - (shield skill / (5 + size factor))
3. Extra one handed delay = min(1d(adjusted shield evasion penalty), 1d(adjusted shield evasion penalty))

But the last mention of version is .7, no idea if things have changed in .8 or .9.

...

In other news, I always have the hardest time choosing a god for my casters. Sif Muna is pretty standard, especially once you get around to Necromutation and the ability to abuse channeling. But Ash's bonus experience and bonus to skills is pretty freaking sweet. Vehumet's guaranteed books and Conjuration power boost is also pretty nice for the mid game.

I think they took out Ash's bonus exp.

Ah, it looks like Ash's bonus exp was replaced by bonus to skills based on piety, bound slots, and the type of items bound in those slots. Learndb is bereft of information here; the wiki is actually updated with details from .9 regarding this functionality.
