Argh this game is brutal. Most i've managed so far is D8, where i get mauled for making bad decisions in fights. Bugger, last game i even had a gourmand amulet :( but couldn't find an altar of sif muna, so i guess that evens things out.

Finding out that eating contaminated meat can work (and at a pretty ok rate too) for the more picky eater races helped me a lot though. Much less starvation trouble :)

Holy cra-----

Level 7 Deep elf Wizard of Sif Muna, Dungeon:5
Weapon: Staff of Enchantment
+Amulet of Faith
+Ring of Ice

I just found the temple where all altars lie, and I took Sif Muna, since I'm a wizard. I went down a level, to level 5. Little did I know what was in store..

..first Blork the Orc comes, I confuse him with Mepthitic cloud and kill him, while an ogre and some other monsters try to get to me too, from 3 different directions. I kill them all. next I step into a very large open area, with several very open rooms and wide corridors. And in soon I see what I feared: Sigmund. In the middle of a very large open area. Sigmund sees me, flickers and vanishes....he cast invisibility! I run, because I don't have the confidence to take on him while he's invisible. I run, but he chases after me. I cast a mephitic cloud where he's supposed to be but doesn't seem to help (I get shot twice)...but for some very weird reason, sigmund gives up and runs back (or so I assume, attacks stopped).

I walk back but I see an ogre closing in. I MISCAST the mephitic cloud, and start casting another when I notice an imp coming from west (ogre from south). No worries yet, I manage to confuse the ogre. BUT! Then I notice 2 zombies (orc+snake) walking into view. Then Sigmund comes into view. So now I panic a bit: I got OGRE, imp, 2 zombies and sigmund on me and I'm in a corner on an open area. And then a CENTAUR appears too. By some miracle I manage to destroy a zombie, confuse other monsters, escape behind behind a corner, escape, revitalize my magic & health and kill them all.

Phew, most intense situation I've survived from. I guess there are worse things yet in store for me :D

--

In other news, my ghosts are nasty sons of bit**es. Only managed to kill 2 of many I've met.

That ammy of faith is a double edged sword. You lose piety when you take it off. Not sure on the numbers though.

I rarely use the amulet of gourmand. I like switching amulets too much. I don't know what you guys are doing to starve so often.  :P

Am I the only one who never uses the auto-explore?

Using auto-explore makes me lose focus and it wastes a lot of turns. I use it for the first few floors, then I explore manually. If I'm worshiping Chei then I use it all the time.

Will wearing a robe of the archmagi anger Trog? And will Trog give gifts?

No. Yes.

1/3 piety lost. I only use it in Sprint or if I'm worshiping a god who grants gifts.

I'm at D:11 right now, and I'm just on some HUGE open area level filled with water pools. Killed Erica, and thanks to that amulet I just got a gift from Sif Muna. A spell book, from which I learned "Bolt of Magma"....which actually saved my life, because soon after a Wight or some other similiar, with "very high" cold resistance, and my only attack spells were frost spells (+magic dart/mephitic cloud).

Short: It helped me to get a useful spellbook \o/

---

Question:
I'm level 10 right now, on D:11. There's entrances to both Hive AND "Lair of Beasts" here. I've never seen them before and the crawl wiki doesn't really tell anything about their difficulty.

What am I adviced to do?
-Hive
-Lair
-Continue to D:12
? Really don't want to lose this character to some stupid mistake :(

Do you have poison resistance? If not, I'd suggest you avoid both. Hive is usually trivial with rPois (tons of bees, but they do minimal physical damage), but Lair'll take a bit of work even if you have it (rPois there mainly protects against spiny frogs and the like) - it's probably a better idea for you to wait until you have trouble getting further in the main dungeon before you try it. That said, they're definitely the two easiest branches overall.

Robe of the Archmagi reduces the XP you receive by a large amount, so only use it after you're level 27.

I think the Autoexplore is making you guys starve. Like Dr. Feelgood, I very rarely have food problems unless I'm playing a troll, or berserking all the time. Or using Mahkleb's powers a lot.

Rules for food:
1) Butcher every corpse, and always have a chunk of meat on you if you can.
2) Never eat your permanent food unless you have to. If you're hungry or very hungry, keep looking for something edible to kill, and eat that instead.
3) Don't use autoexplore all the time.

Follow those rules and you should rarely have food problems. Unless you're doing things that hunger you.

So I just picked this up a few days ago on recommendation from the people on the ADOM forums, and I seem to have encountered an oddity. I have ran into what appears to be a Corrupted Ecumenical Temple, were the walls are a mix of black metal, grey stone and some teal-colored rock (Microcline maybe? The horrors!). There are 9 altars inside; 1 to Nemelex Xobeh, 1 to Yredelemnul, 2 to Xom and 6 to Lugonu, which is crazy because Lugonu normally doesn't have any.

Is there a particular reason why it turned up this way, and does anyone know where I could find altars for the other gods? I was thinking about going for Okawaru, though Sif Muna or Zin might also work.

From what I understand the temple is just occasionally generated like that.

Please don't say that until you've played all the (good hundred and change, aiee) other ones... :-\

Crawl's definitely one of the best. The best, though? No, no, I really wouldn't say so.

Mind you, I wouldn't say there is a best one, as taste comes in to it pretty heavily. I prefer Incursion or Gearhead to Crawl, ferex, and there's a number of RLs that one-up crawl in various areas.

Crawl is one of the cleanest, though, in terms of presentation et al. I'll give it that, and there's plenty of neat ideas strewn all through it. That first part, especially, appeals to a lot of people.

Re: Funky temple, yeah, that's a corrupted temple. Supposedly, the other altars will be generated within a certain number of dungeon levels of the temple, just laying around on the level. Neat lil'thing, but terribly annoying (especially when the temple itself is on its bottom level) for combos that really need a god to survive the depths.

Lugonu has a power that allows you to corrupt the dungeon, this is what is supposed to have happened here.

That [Magma] is a bit deep down there, don't you think?
You really aren't thinking like a dwarf.

If you think it is down too far, you move it up until it reaches an acceptable elevation.

You're guaranteed an altar to each of the regular gods somewhere on D:1-9. (At least, all the gods that are usually in the Temple.)
